Recovery Prayers |
A. A. Prayers Spirituality is the foundation of A. A. and recovery. A. A. is not a religion, nor is it a church…although many in recovery use it as such. In order to heal our wounded spirit, we must let go of the bondage of self. A leap of faith. Building trust in something that the senses say isn't there…but it is! Here is how prayer fits into the twelve steps as I see them. |
The First Step Prayer Usually, for most of us, our first step prayer consisted of only two words…"Help me." The Second Step Prayer The second step prayer for most of us is often a prayer of thanks for the miracle of our recoveries and having our lives given back to us. We recognize that we could not do it alone. The Third Step Prayer "God, I offer myself to Thee - to build with me and to do with me as Thou wilt. Relieve me of the bondage of self, that I may better do Thy will. Take away my difficulties, that victory over them may bear witness to those I would help of Thy Power, Thy Love, and Thy way of life. May I do Thy will always!" The Fourth Step Prayer "This is a sick man. How can I be helpful to him? God save me from being angry. Thy will be done." The Fifth Step Prayer For many, the entire fifth step is a prayer in the fact that we are going to God with all that we held from the world and ourselves. The Sixth Step Prayer For many the sixth step prayer asks for willingness to be rid of our defects. The Seventh Step Prayer "My Creator, I am now willing that you should have all of me, good and bad. I pray that you now remove from me every single defect of character which stands in the way of my usefulness to you and my fellows. Grant me strength, as I go out from here to do your bidding. Amen." The Eighth Step Prayer Again, in the eighth step we ask for willingness, but also wisdom and strength, for clearing away some of the last wreckage from the past. We ask God to provide opportunity and grace. Then we make the amends.. The Ninth Step Prayer Many consider the act of amends a prayer because we are willing to put our resentments behind us and reach out to others that we have caused pain. Again we ask for courage, wisdom, and grace to bridge the void between souls. The Tenth Step Prayer "How can I best serve Thee - Thy will (not mine) be done." The Eleventh Step Prayer The Prayer of St. Francis, The Serenity Prayer, The Lord's Prayer, The Twenty - Third Psalm, are all about deepening our spiritual understanding. The Twelfth Step Prayer It is said that the way we live our lives is a prayer. When we were drinking and using, it was a prayer for help. When we were beginning recovery, it was a prayer for hope, and now after sobriety has become a part of us, a prayer of gratitude. When we know better, we do better. In response to our own need, we must give back. The prayer then becomes the service to others. We share of ourselves and pass along what has worked for us. Then…and ONLY then may we find what God has intended for each of us. Portions of the above is Copyrighted © 1939, 1955, 1976, Alcoholics Anonymous World Service ®, All rights reserved. My Twelfth Step Prayer God, allow my words, thoughts, and deeds to reflect Your will. Grant me the Compassion and Strength to help the suffering, the Resources to fill their needs, and the Courage, Insight, and Wisdom to guide them until they may walk with You on their own. Let me never lose sight that I was once in need and I am by Your Grace enjoying the fruits of my sobriety. Let my life be my gift to You for the many blessings You have given me. Amen.
