The Tragedy of King Richard II

William Shakespeare

King Richare II prefers pleasure, art and poetical wordplay to the duties of state. Believing that God alone can depose an anointed king, he remains blind to the machinations of his cousin Bolingbroke until it is too late. Only when he is stripped of his crown does he understand the frailty and splendor of his humanity. In recounting the tragic history of Richard's downfall, Shakespeare holds up a medieval mirror in which we see our modern faces.

Macbeth

William Shakespeare

When the lure of the Scottish crown proves too great for Macbeth and his ambitious lady, they stop at nothing - not treachery, not witchcraft, not murder - to attain it. Their actions bring them success, but there is a price to pay; the higher Macbeth rises in the world, the deeper he descends into a personal hell fraught with madness and horror. In one of his greatest tragedies, Shakespeare explores the darker side of vaulting ambition.

The Merry Wives of Windsor

William Shakespeare

In Windsor, a peaceful country town, the arrival of Sir John Falstaff is bound to attract attention, especially when he pays court to two respectable married women at once. But Mistress page and Mistress Ford are much more upstanding that Sir John gives them credit for, and they teach him that his big-city ways are no match for their small-town wit. Shakespeare's merry comedy pays affectionate homage to the manners and people of the English countryside.
