Italy - the Tuscan Hills -1999
We traveled for three weekends during spring of 1999 with our friends, Dick & Betsy Jones.

Italy is medieval cities of narrow, winding, cobblestone streets that lead one to duomos, sumptious eateries, and wonderous architecture.  The Italian people are gregarious, family-oriented, and love cyclists!  The road is filled with senior men sporting wavy white hair, bright lycra club uniforms and spinning legs.

We camped in the folowing cities at the top of the hill (of course):  Florence, Montecatini Terme, Pisa, Casciana Terme, Volterra, San Gimignanno, Siena, Assisi, Orvieto, Chuisi, and Asciano.  From these cities we often made loop rides into the surrounding countryside checking out local produce and wonderful, inexpensive table wines.

The duomo literally brought tear to our eyes - such beauty!

Italian city traffic was comprised of buses, trucks, and 1,000 motorscooters belching plumes of noxious vapors into the air.  We  breathed these fumes in copious amounts during rush hour--which was much of the day.  Amazing to us were the bicycles weaving in and out of the traffic.  It took us awhile to emulate this practice while fully loaded.  We've debated about pulling a trailer vs using panniers to haul our gear.  In crowded cities, we feel more comfortable manuvering in tight spaces with the panniers, particularly since we are already riding the unwieldy long bike.

But, then there is the opposite of the traffic:
Italian Time.   Shift yourself into relax mode.  Breathe deeply.  You are no longer in control.  The fast food experience was left at home. You will now negotiate the positive and negative of each piece of lettuce or fruit which is picked for you by the grocer.  There is always time for family, for friends, to chat and hug and enjoy the afternoon weather, a drink or coffee in the local cafe.

Italy cannot be separated from Gelato.  You ask:  "What is Gelato?"  It is a rich, velvety, creamy ambrosia:  best tasting ice cream that has ever touched ones lips.  It comes in all flavors and colors.  Do you want 3, 4, or 6 scoops?  You are certain of finding a favorite because there is a Gelato stand or store on every corner.  If the people, the architecture, the history, the art, the landscape is not enough to bring one back to Italy, then Gelato is!
