"Once Upon A Mattress" is the musical version of The Princess and the Pea. Taking place in 13th century England, "Once Upon A Mattress" is the extended story of a prince in search of a wife with an over protective, intrusive mother always meddling. The law of the kingdom is that no one can marry until Prince Dauntless does. When Sir Harry, a handsome knight, finds out that the love of his life, Lady Larken, a lady in waiting, is pregnant with his child, he goes out in search of a princess to pass the tests of the queen. When he returns, he brings with him the tomboyish, strong and willful Princess Winnifred. The Queen plots to test her for sensitivity, trying to prove Winnifred is not of royal blood. The Queen's right hand man, The Wizard, is told to make a sleeping potion, create a hypnotizing mirror, and gather heavy incense in order to make the princess sleep without feeling a pea placed under twenty mattresses. What insues is a hysterical play, that will have your sides splitting with laughter and your brain spinning with thoughts of a fantastical kingdom and the princess who won the heart of a prince. |
