Nigel Parry on Left Edge V Diff (5.3),Carnedd Filiast Slabs,North Wales. |
Early on in the season,Richard Sawyer and I repeated this obscure,600' mountaineering route on the massive Filiast Slabs which rise up to 1000'. The indifferent weather had made us look for something fairly ameinable and sure enough, half way up we were hit by a squall ! Left Edge is a good route for a novice as apart from a couple of thinner sections, most of the climbing is straightforward and easy........ |

On The Mag page I gave an account of climbing Kirkus Route with Richard Sawyer. However, having just obtained some images of the day itself,I hope that they convey something of the atmosphere and scale of this classic route. In my experience, one of the great VS routes of Wales.......... |

Last year Geoff Peters and I climbed a new line on the terminally unpopular Y Diffwys,Moel Hebog. It was undoubtably the first new route there for many years. We hadn't planned to climb there but our wanderings on some lower outcrops led us into the great cwm beneath the 400' vegetated cliff of Y Diffwys. I spotted what looked like a pretty direct line up the south cliff and we were delighted to discover that the line went pretty direct on excellent rock all the way. For the record, this mountaineering route is a 210' ,three pitch Hard Severe climb 4b-4b-4a. Thanks to Geoff for unearthing this image of the day.... |
Forestry Buttress,Rhobell Fawr,Mid Wales |
In July 97 Harold Drasdo and I climbed a VS route up the left edge of this little virginal crag on the south flank of remote Mid Wales peak Rhobell Fawr. The route Sentina went into the Meirionydd guidebook along with three Terry Taylor routes. Since then Terry and partners have put up around one dozen routes up to E6 on rock Terry describes as The best in Wales ! (See OTE Jan 2004) Liam and I have also added two severes in 2004. |
Terry Taylor on the first ascent of an as yet unnamed E1.(US 5-10)Craig y Braich.N Snowdonia |
In mid June Terry Taylor and I finally climbed together and established 4 new routes on an undeveloped crag in north Snowdonia.Despite being a busy GP,Terry is one of the most enthusiastic explorers of remote crags in north and Mid Wales.Author of the Arenig section in the new Meirionydd guide,Terry has been involved in hundreds of first ascents in the area ranging up to E7 * More info in the new On the rock page |
