Y

Yesti: Grouping: fairy. Known as the "Giddy Fairy", the yesti is related to the zimp and the extril. Some (not fairies) say they were zimps driven insane by extrils. They are called "Giddy Fairies" because they are almost always laughing usually for little or no discernable reason. Other fairies think they are harmless and fun, but the yesti can make humans and some other races lose control of themselves sometimes in anger or joining the yesti in fits of uncontrolable laughter. Their laughter is not always harmful to humans, though and sometimes can have very good effects also. Genre-zimp related fairy. Source: mine.

Yeti: Grouping: nonmagic humanoid or daemon. The yeti is an unknown hairy roughly humanoid animal dwelling in the Himayalan mountains. The word "Yeti" is a Tibetan word which could either refer to a real but unknown animal or a mountain spirit or demon, no one knows which. The native traditions about it have become muddled and, if anything, less is known about it than used to be known about it. Genre-unknown. Source: Himalayan legends, info from the quote nethack quotes from The Encyclopedia of Monsters by Daniel Cohen. (that's a book I'd like to get my hands on, but have never found)

Yik: Grouping: fairy. Called a "Drunk Fairy" and easily mistaken for a drunken elf, it is related to the common elf. The yik often acts drunk and has fairy magic dealing with slowing a person's mind or messing up their judgement. Other fairies have some similar fairy abilities, but the yik specializes in conditions resembling drunkeness and has less fairy magic in general than most other fairies. Genre-elf related fairy. Source: mine.

      Ymp (see Imp [1])

Z

Zhang: Grouping: magical beast. av.length 4'-5'. The zhang is a reptillian beast more closely resembling the scaled dog than a lizard. It has a spiked tail and its claws and teeth are sharper than a dogs. A zhang can be domesticated, but not as easily as a dog, and usually to protect a person or guard a place. Unlike a dog, a zhang has good vision (especially in the dark) and not a very keen sense of smell, but like a dog, it has exellent hearing. Like it's relative, the zhelung, it can jump several times its hight. Genre-reptile/zhelung. Source: mine.

Zhelung genre: Grouping: magical beast. The zhelung are a family of magical lizards. Some say they decended from wyverns, others say they are somehow related to fairies, and still others say both are true. A few say they are not related to either but appeared out of cave waters with unknown origin. It is generally accepted that they are only distantly related to dragons, if at all. They often live in caves, and generally prefer the dark to light. The zhelung also tend to be good swimmers, even the types that don't live in the water. They are also exetremely flexible and can twist their bodies in odd directions. Source: mine.

Zhelung: Grouping: magical beast. The original zhelung is the father of the well lizard and uncle to the rasti and zhang. Also called a "flashing lizard", its body makes quick flashes of light in the dark. Its skin and flesh are translucent almost the color of clear water. It usually lives in underground bodies of water, though once in awhile some might live above ground often in a river or lake. The zhelung can see better in the dark, but it doesn't hate light, though it hurts its eyes. It is known that they have a strange magic, but not known what its magic does. It can jump 15 or 20 feet in the air from the water, some say higher. It would be a deadly enemy in combat, but it is almost never aggressive and not dangerous when met. genre-reptile/zhelung. Source: mine, inspiried by something in a kid's book called a 'water weird' (don't remember what book it was).

Zimp: Grouping: fairy. Fairies in general are, of course, quite different from humans in personality. Most types of fairies think very little about themselves, but the zimp is known for caring for others. They have several nicknames including "helpful fairy" and "playful fairy". The zimps are playful and loving to everything and everyone, and they love to help and encourage people. They have powerful but usually very subtle fairy magic used to lift people's spirits and help others in many ways, and they also have a little magic dealing with healing, music, and talking to animals. (They can't talk to animals as well as the lezalel or do anything with music as well as the mihzare). They are wise with a childlike wisdom but not especially intelligent, or rather they can't understand many things that humans seem to understand, but can understand many things most humans don't. The fairies' mischivous nature is not absent though, they do like to play tricks, but their tricks are never harmful. They look like children about 7 to 9 years of age in appearance. They could be mistaken for human children, except for some whose hair and eyes are sometimes colors that humans don't have for hair and eyes. Genre-zimp related fairy. Source: mine, appears in my second novel.

Zombie: Grouping: undead. A corpse not very long dead (or else it would be a skeliton) which is reanimated by a wizard and under the wizard or other magic user's control. I have been told that something similar has been done in real life with voodoo black magic but I'm not sure if that's true or not. Genre-reanimated undead. Source: popular idea.
