My friend, this is the most important question of life; your joy or sorrow for all eternity depends upon your answer: Are you saved? It is not enough to be a “good person”, and it is not enough to attend a church. Are you saved? Do you have an assurance that you will go to Heaven when you die? Jesus said, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.” (John 3:3) We also know that there is only one way to get to Heaven. Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No man comes to the Father except through Me.” (John 14:6) “Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.” (Acts 4:12) In the Bible, God reveals His plan of how to be born again, which means to be saved. His plan is simple! You can be saved today. Here’s how: 1. You must realize and admit you are a sinner. “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23) “If we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar, and His word is not in us.” (1 John 1:10) Adam’s original sin introduced sin to our nature, and since then, we have all been guilty. “Through one man sin entered the world, and death through sin, and thus death spread to all men, because all sinned:” (Romans 5:12) Because of our sinful nature, we cannot be “good enough” to be with God. “But we are all like an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are like filthy rags” (Isaiah 64:6) Because you are a sinner, you are condemned to death. “For the wages of sin is death” (Romans 6:23) This death includes eternal separation from God in hell. You will not escape accountability for your sins. “It is appointed for men to die once, but after this the judgment” (Hebrews 9:27) 2. Be willing to turn from sin (repent). Jesus said, “I tell you, no; but unless you repent you will all likewise perish.” (Luke 13:5) “Truly, these times of ignorance God overlooked, but now commands all men everywhere to repent,” (Acts 17:30) 3. Know and believe with your heart that Jesus Christ died as a substitute for you, paying the price for your sins. He was buried, and He rose from the dead. “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life." (John 3:16) “But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” (Romans 5:8) “For He made Him [Jesus] who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him. (2 Corinthians 5:21) “If you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.” (Romans 10:9) 4. Through prayer, invite Jesus into your life to become your personal Savior. “For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.” (Romans 10:10) “For ‘whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.’” (Romans 10:13) What to pray: This prayer is not a formula; the right combination of words is not what saves you. What is important is that you are reaching with your whole heart for God. You can pray something like: Dear God, I recognize that I am a sinner and that my sin has separated me from You. I know that I need forgiveness for my sins. I believe that Jesus Christ was my substitute when He died on the cross. I believe that He was buried and then rose again, defeating death and assuring eternal life for those who follow Him. I believe that the blood He shed is sufficient to cleanse me from my sins. I now receive Jesus as my personal Savior. I thank You for the forgiveness of my sins, the gift of salvation and everlasting life, because of Your merciful grace. Amen. Now, if you have prayed a prayer like this from your heart, REJOICE, because you are saved! Don’t worry if you feel like you aren’t worthy of God’s salvation; none of us are. God does all of the saving; we don’t earn it. “For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast.” (Ephesians 2:8-9) You have now been adopted as a child of God! “But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name.” (John 1:12) More good news: you no longer have to be a slave to your past! “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.” (2 Corinthians 5:17) If you have received Jesus Christ as your Savior, as a Christian you should: 1. Read your Bible every day to get to know Christ better. “Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.” (2 Timothy 2:15) “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” (Psalms 119:105) 2. Talk to God in prayer every day. “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God;” (Philippians 4:6) “Continue earnestly in prayer, being vigilant in it with thanksgiving” (Colossians 4:2) “And whatever things you ask in prayer, believing, you will receive.” (Matthew 21:22) 3. Be baptized, worship, fellowship, and serve with other Christians in a church where Christ is preached and the Bible is the final authority. “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit” (Matthew 28:19) “Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching.” (Hebrews 10:25) “All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work." (2 Timothy 3:16) 4. Tell others about Christ. “And He said to them, ‘Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature.’” (Mark 16:15) “For if I preach the gospel, I have nothing to boast of, for necessity is laid upon me; yes, woe is me if I do not preach the gospel!” (1 Corinthians 9:16) “For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes, for the Jew first and also for the Greek.” (Romans 1:16) 5. Try to live a life that will please God. “He who says he abides in Him [Jesus] ought himself also to walk just as He walked.” (1 John 2:6) “Let love be without hypocrisy. Abhor what is evil. Cling to what is good. Be kindly affectionate to one another with brotherly love, in honor giving preference to one another; not lagging in diligence, fervent in spirit, serving the Lord; rejoicing in hope, patient in tribulation, continuing steadfastly in prayer; distributing to the needs of the saints, given to hospitality. Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse. Rejoice with those who rejoice, and weep with those who weep. Be of the same mind toward one another. Do not set your mind on high things, but associate with the humble. Do not be wise in your own opinion. Repay no one evil for evil. Have regard for good things in the sight of all men. If it is possible, as much as depends on you, live peaceably with all men. Beloved, do not avenge yourselves, but rather give place to wrath; for it is written, ‘Vengeance is Mine, I will repay,’ says the Lord. Therefore ‘if your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him a drink; for in so doing you will heap coals of fire on his head.’ Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.” (Romans 12:9-21) We don’t have to rely on our own strength to live righteously. If we rely on God, He will help us live a victorious Christian life. “No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it." (1 Corinthians 10:13) And when we do stumble and fall into sin, we need not lose heart. “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” (1 John 1:9) |
