FACILITIES |
Sometimes folks like to see how someone else has their kennel arrangements set up. Since we have moved several times, and our menagerie has grown as well as our housing requirements, we have found different ways of managing the housing for our dogs. Out here in South Dakota, we feel we have come up with the best arrangement ever! |
Our Kenneling facilities are not in a separate building. The runs are off of the garage and along side the house. |
Right now we have 5 dogs, 2 Afghans and a Miniature Pinscher live in the house. Due to family members' allergies, we needed to find a way to have the dogs indoors, but not all throughout the house! When we built on a family room a couple of years ago, we found a way to create an attractive indoor dog area that would keep the dogs confined, but still close to the family. This is called the "puppy room" and is along the outside wall of the family room, away from the traffice flow but with perfect indoor-outdoor access for the dogs! |
From this area in the Family Room the dogs have a doggie door out into the garage, where there are two runs, one with this family room access, and the other without. |

The run on the left has the doggie door to the family room (up a step) as well as another doggie door out to the outside run. It has a top that gains us some much-needed storage, but as the top is only about 40" high, it makes it hard to clean the run. The run on the right has no access into the house but Divot the Collie doesn't need to be in the house. He has his own personal heater when the temps get cold and he also gets to join the Afs in the other run when it gets really cold. His doggie door out to the run has a drop down door that can be easily closed from outside the kennel. Both runs have wooden pallets so the dogs can be off of the gravel or concrete. |
A couple of years ago we added this carport over the outside runs. It has been WONDERFUL. No snow or rain, and in the summer it stays very cool because it is on the east side of the house.. Then we added the fencing beyond the runs to enclose the area outside the runs, and to give safe access to the back yard. It is all graveled, (5/8 inch size chipped granite) so it drains well and feet stay dry and firm. We call this the 'dog yard' and it is great for bad weather. The old picnic table is the 'throne".. |
This is the view out my kitchen window. The runs are only 5' X 15', and the additional area of the dog yard is only 35' X 16', so playtime out in the yard is imperative. We have only a half-acre lot with the back quarter acre fenced, but the dogs seem to take full use of it. They can really run.... and jump. You might be able to pick out the yellow clamps that hold the electric fence in place. With this, I know everyone is safe. |
