So back at Hiram I had to take three classes to finish my degree, which left an open spot. So I managed to convice the college chaplin to do an independent study with me. I designed it based on my developing interest on theology and film and desided to do it on portrails of Jesus, since there have been several books written about the subject. Of all the films I watched, The Last Temptation of Christ (1988) directed by Martin Scorsese grew to be my favorite. Given what I discus in my paper this should not rally come as any surprise. Scorsese presents us with a Jesus who had some pretty major struggles with his own faith. A Jesus who struggled, not only faith, but every aspect of his humanity-from family and friend to his sexuallity. I was able to embrace that image of Jesus more so than any other because of what I had gone through in my own life. The struggling with sexuallity hit especially close to home because of my own willingness to sacrifice having a family, my desire for which is second only to doing the will of God, to become a priest. That very issue was Jesus' last temptation. The guy who gave me the psychological evaluation could not understand why I was willing to make such a sacrifice. I think he probably whould have rejected Jesus from the priesthood, too. Those are just some of my intimate thought on the subject (And yes, an admittedly cheap shot at a psychologist.) Read my paper for the more scholarly stuff. |
