MARCH -- 2003 Reconstruction of El Salvador after the earthquakes of 2000. According to statistics provided by the Salvadorian government and the US Catholic Church, reconstruction will take 10 to 12 years if the international community provides assistance. Unfortunately, due to world events we currently face, the aid has been very limited. With the horrible events of September 11 and the present threat of war, the victims in El Salvador have practically been forgotten. Although they have received little aid, they continue in their struggle to overcome such a terrible situation. The poor who do not have the necessary materials to rebuild their homes desperately need our help. Catholic Charities is commendably helping within their means providing food and construction material. With the victims own labor they have managed to rebuild approximately 10% of the damage left behind by the earthquakes, giving priority to hospitals, schools and the people most in need. The parish Our lady of Loreto in Hempstead N.Y. is actively collaborating in the reconstruction of San Pedro Masahuat and its devastated outskirts. With donations from many generous good willed people, six houses were built. Help us to continue in this effort to provide those in need of adequate shelter a simple decent roof over their heads. The need for building material and electrical supplies, such as light switches, wiring, electrical housings and breakers (10-15-20-30 amp.), is urgently needed.
