Quake Aid for El Salvador

A group of churches, businesses and Hispanic support groups are seeking donations to rebuild homes in El Salvador as the Central American country continues to recover from a 7.6-magnitude earthquake that struck in January.

Several institutions, including the Parish of Our Lady of Loretto in Hempstead, the Holiday Inn in Westbury and Circulo de la Hispanidad, a nonprofit group in Long Beach, are concentrating their efforts in San Pedro Masahuat, a hard-hit village of 3,500 just south of the capital, San Salvador.

Gabriel Vaca, who is coordinating the project through Our Lady of Loretto, said the groups are seeking private donations and business sponsors who can help rebuild the area school or sponsor the construction of 10 to 20 homes at an estimated $1,500 per house.

A smaller earthquake struck El Salvador in February.

Donations should be made payable to O.L.L. El Salvador Aid, and mailed to the Parish of Our Lady of Loretto, 104 Greenwhich St., Hempstead, N.Y. 11550. For more information, call 516-694-2193 or 516-330-1554. - John Moreno Gonzales
