This discrepancy needs to be resolved!

_______________
The following information was researched and contributed by researcher Mary Jane Arledge Murray:
"Clement Arledge was born about 1748, son of Isaac Arledge and Anna _________; d. after September 19, 1821 will, Fairfield, SC. His wife was not mentioned in his will, and her name is not known. His will was proven January 23, 1822.
Children:
1. Jephmiah, b. ca. 1776. Lived with Cyrus in Limestone County, AL. Got half of all land on Catawba River and was Executor in father's will.
2. Clement, b. ca. 1777; d. Franklin County, TN. Got half of all land on Catawba River in his father's will, although he moved to Franklin County, TN before 1812. He was married to Martha Ginn.
3. son 4. daughter 5. David } These three children probably were born between 1779 and 1781, order not known. They probably died as babies or young children, as they were not named in their father's will.
6. CYRUS, b. ca. 1783, Fairfield County, SC; d. July 4, 1852, Limestone County, AL. He was married to Lucy Featherstone. His father bequeathed his "beloved" son Cyrus 25 cents, which probably meant that he had been given his inheritance earlier, possibly when he moved to AL between 1814 and 1818.
7. Ann, b. ca. 1788; m. ___________ Warren. Was co-executor of father's will and got land where her father lived, two girls (Lucey & Mariah) and one man (Silvy).
8. Isaac, b. ca. 1789-1790; Got 14 year old boy (Tom), a horse and 50 acres.
9. Ely, b. ca 1791; Got one girl (Tillie, 13) and maid (Dolly) and $400 with interest from Ann.
Clement also willed his father, Isaac, the land Isaac had given him. This will is in Book F, Folio 121, Fairfied District, SC.
He was a co-executor of father's will and got 75 acres. The 75 acres was the upper part of plantation where Isaac dwelt, & 1/5 remainder."
Notes for ???: Graham Louer wrote in May 1999:
Pam,
one part -- the easy part -- of the lost message concerned the Anna Arledge buried in Chester Co SC that you asked me to dig up again. :-)
I could not easily lay my hands on the photocopy of something [prob. A cemetery survey] where I found this, but fortunately I had copied the gist of it to my list called "Arledge Wives", where I find the following:
Anna Arledge [I did not on the list note the exact spelling of the last name, but presumably it was so spelt] died 15 Nov 1814 born c May 1757 .... this no doubt calculated from her age at death on headstone. This Anna was of course born too late to be the mother of some of Isaac's children, but could be mother of Isaac & William, and perhaps a daughter or two.
I presume, living to age 57, that she was an Arledge wife, not an unmarried daughter.
I suppose she could also be a wife of one of the sons of Isaac that I don't keep track of.

An interesting story from http://www.familytreemaker.com/users/a/m/o/Virginia--Amorde/GENE0001-0004.html:
"Samuel J. Weeks, Louisa's father, wrote his will 6 March 1845. He died in 1845, date unknown.
"He left at home a wife, Lavina, and two small daughters, Lucinda and Louisa. Lucinda was by a former marriage and she was classified as an idiot. Louisa was by his last wife, Lavina.According to his will which had been contested, he had at least the following other children: Peter, Jeptha and Samuel, Jr.
"He also left two servants, Caleb and Matilda who were husband and wife, and six or seven other slaves. A few years after Samuel's death, Caleb and Matilda had a son and daughter, Jim and Jane. Jane went to Kentucky and Jim went to Nashville, claiming to be a free man, but was brought back by the family to work for them. Caleb and Matilda were willed 20 acres of Samuel's farm, which was located on Bean's Creek in Buncomb near Salem Community of Franklin County, Tennessee. The will directed Caleb and Matilda to care for Lucinda and Louisa until they were grown.
"Lucinda H. Weeks (Weaks) had a Mr. Faris as a guardian and he died and Clem Arledge was appointed her guardian. Lucinda's cousin, Emeline and Emeline's grandmother cared for Lucinda, who lived on one third of her father's farm. Emeline (Hutchinson) married James Noah. They had five children and lived on Lucinda's land and cared for her for 17 or 18 years when in 1877 Lucinda's brother-in-law brought a law suit against James and Emeline Noah to try to get possession of Lucinda and her land. At this time I do not know the outcome of the lawsuit. Emeline's grandmother died before Emeline and James Noah married.
"Samuel J. Weeks' farm consisted of 30 or 40 acres and was willed one third to Lucinda, one third to Louisa, and one third to Lavina after 20 acres had been willed to Caleb and Matilda. "

The 1850 census for Limestone Co. AL says Isaac is 65 years old, putting his birth year at 1785. It lists Isaac ALDRIDGE, 65, SC, Farmer, then Missoura ALDRIDGE, 27, SC. Is this a daughter or granddaughter? A new wife?
The 1860 census puts him at 78 years old, putting his birth year at 1782.
He got 14 year old boy (Tom), a horse and 50 acres from his father's will.

5. CYRUS /7 ARLEDGE (CLEMENT6, ISAAC5, WILLIAM4 ALDRIDGE, CLEMENT3, CLEMENT2, JOHN ALDRICH/1) was born 1783 in Fairfield Co. SC (alt. Charleston, SC?); HOH 1810 Chester Co, SC, and died July 04, 1852 in Limestone County, AL. He married LUCY FEATHERSTON17,1818, daughter of JOHN FEATHERSTON and WILLIE COLSTON. She was born 1782 in Virginia19, and died October 14, 1866 in Houston County, TX (Buried in Arledge & Jones Cem., near Crockett, HoustonCo.TX).
Lucy and Cyrus lived in South Carolina before moving to Alabama. Cyrus is found in Chester County, South Carolina in the 1810 Federal Census:
1810 SC/Chester Co:
280 ARLEDGE, Cyrus 00110-11010-00
A643 CHESTER CO, SC ARLEDGE Cyrus M-252 060 280 - No Twp Listed
Who is the 16-26 year old young man living with him here? Could this be a younger brother? It doesn't fit the age profile of Cyrus' sons.
John Featherston, the father of Lucy (Cyrus's wife) was living here too. Isaac, Clement, Moses and William Arledge are also found in the 1810 census, in Fairfield County, S.C. Isaac Aldridge and John Aldredge Jr. are found in the 1810 census, in Edgefield County, S.C. Chester and Fairfield Counties are adjacent to each other while Newberry County lies between Fairfield and Edgefield Counties to the southwest.
He moved to AL between 1814 and 1818. Cyrus is found in the 1820 Federal Census for Limestone Co., AL.
1839 Deed of Sale of Slaves to Cyrus Arledge by Matthew Bell, Limestone CO, AL:
Know all men by these presents that I -- Matthew Bell of the County of Limestone and State of Alabama have this day for and in consideration of the sum of One Thousand and Fourteen Dollars and ninety seven cents to me in hand paid the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged barganed & sold and by these presents doth bargan and sell unto Cyrus Arledge of the County & State a foresaid a certain Female Negro slave named Grace supposed to be Forty years of age and her Two Female Children vis. Silva aged six years and Roda aged Five years to have and to hold the above described Negro slaves together with their future increase to the only proper use and behoof of him the sd. Arledge his heirs Administrators or assigns forever and I the sd. Matthew Bell for my self heirs Administrators or assigns the sd. Negroe slaves to the sd. Arledge his heirs administrators or assigns forever and also against the claim or claims of any and every person or persons claiming the same will forever warrant & defend by these presents in witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand & seal this 23rd November 1839. Matthew Bell (seal) Test: Joseph Arledge J.F. Arledge
Note from Bob Arledge (18 Feb 1999): This deed or a copy of it was probably in the cellar of Sallie Arledge Hollis and later obtained by her son Loy Hollis, who probably passed it on to his daughter and/or then on to his granddaughter, Jakie Patterson Spinks. Mildred Colleen Patterson, granddaughter of Sallie Arledge and W.G. Hollis, obtained it or a copy of it and passed a copy on to me. Sallie Arledge was the daughter of Andrew James Arledge and Mary Elizabeth Meridith, and the great granddaughter of William Arledge and Mary W. Slaughter. William Arledge was the son of Cyrus Arledge. I believe Matthew Bell who sold the slaves to Cyrus was his son-in-law, married to Cyrus' daughter, Ann. I believe the witnesses to be Joseph Cyrus Arledge and John Fisher Arledge, sons of Cyrus.
1850 Limestone Al Census: Sirus ALDRIDGE age 67 b. SC, Farmer, Lucy ALDRIDGE, age 69 b. VA, Daniel ALDRIDGE, age 74 b SC, Nathan W. Copeland age 21, overseer, born AL.

Another researcher asking to share information on the descendants of Cyrus Arledge & Lucy Featherston [in 1994] was
Anne Black of El Dorado, AR Phone: (501) 862-4305 email: pinetree@infogo.com
Another researcher put together the descendants of Cyrus Arledge. Her name is
Mary Ann Edwards (Mrs. J. A.) of Austin, Texas Phone: (512) 346-3863
Mary Ann Edwards received much of her info from Hattie Belle Arledge Milburn. She has some fairly complete records on several lines back to 1607. She has Cyrus being born in Charleston, S.C.
The following is information researched and contributed by Mary Jane Arledge Murray:
Cyrus Arledge b. ca. 1783, Fairfield County, SC; d. July 4, 1852, Limestone County, AL. He is the son of Clement Arledge and wife whose name is unknown. Cyrus married Lucy Featherstone around 1807. They were listed as living in Chester County, SC in the 1810 census. Between 1814 and 1818 they moved to Limestone County, AL. The 1820 AL census listed them with 4 boys and 4 girls, with 9 acres cultivated, 2 hired hands, producing 4 bales of cotton, weighing 300 lb/bale. No slaves were listed. His brother, Clement, born ca. 1777, had moved to Franklin County, TN.
Cyrus Arledge married Lucy Featherstone. Lucy was born in 1782 in SC to John F. and Willie Colston Featherstone. John F. Featherston(e) participated in the American Revolution, serving with Marion's men. Around 1853, after Cyrus' death, Lucy went with several grown children and their families to Texas, probably along the Natchez Trace. Lucy was around 72 years old. Travel was in wagons and difficult, full of hardships. Son John and family settled in Crockett, Houston County, TX, in Nov. 1853. Sons Joseph Cyrus and William went on to Fannin County, TX, in early 1854. Daughter Lucinda and husband, William S. Wimberly, may have come to TX, also. Lucy died on October 14, 1866, in Crockett and is buried in the Old Glenwood Cemetery at Crockett. (Note by Robert Thornton Arledge: others have her buried in the Arledge-Jones Cemetery, near Crockett.)
Children to Cyrus Arledge and Lucy Featherstone Arledge are:
1. Clement, b. 1808, Chester County, SC.
2. Willie, b. 1810, Chester County, SC; d. aft. 1820.

This information is from a family Bible in Crockett, listing children born, and from other records.
Bob Arledge writes: The following is from Ames, Edwina Gray Powers and Ames, Stanley Richard, PhD, "Gray, Powers, And Their Interrelated Families: Descendants of Col. Thomas Holden Wade", p. 94, Chapter V, Rochester, NY, 1992:
Cyrus and Lucy and their family, along with John and Willie (Colston) Featherston [Lucy's parents], and Lucy's brother, Howell Featherston, came to Limestone Co. AL by 1820. They lived near Athens, AL on the Elk River.
Cyrus's will was dated 20 Jan. 1848 and was presented to the Court 27 July, 1852. On 21 Aug. 1852, Joseph and William Arledge, as executors, acknowledged their bond with John F. Arledge, Josiah R. Hancock, and William S. Wimberly as sureties. Later that year four of their children, William, Joseph Cyrus, John Fisher, and Lucinda, accompanied by their families, moved to TX. One source states that they were homesteaders and another that they purchased the land. Lucy could have journeyed with them for she died 14 Oct. 1866 in Houston Co., east of Crockett, TX.
Notes for LUCY FEATHERSTON: Either her father or grandfather served with Marion's Men in the American Revolution.

There is an Eli in Chester County in 1820, who would be in the 26-45 age range, with another male in the 18-26 range and two younger sons and a young daughter. Who is the other male??
1820 SC/Chester Co: 050 ARLEDGE, Eli 200110-10010
However, I believe that this Eli returned to Fairfield Co, SC. because of the land sale action below.
The Ely ALDRAGE listed in 1840 Fairfield Co, SC census is too young to be this Eli, and is probably his son. He is living near Joseph Arledge, who was married to his cousin, Eli's daughter Anne. Eli may have died by the 1840 census. Or he might be the ELY ARLEDGE listed in Jackson Co, AL (NE Alabama, not far from Limestone County) with one male aged 40-50, one female aged 40-50, two females 15-20, two females 10-15, and one female aged 5-10.
1843 Will in Fairfield County SC? Really need to sort out these different Eli/Ely Arledges!

Is this the same Jephthah R. Arledge who obtained a Land Patent for 320 acres in Webster Parish, LA in 1860?? If so, he returned to Fairfield Co to die. More likely, it was a cousin Jeptha, son of Clement and Martha of Franklin County, TN. But no, since the JR Arledge listed in the Bossier Parish LA census in 1860 was born in SC! But how could he have been in LA and also served in the Confederacy from SC?
Is this the Jeptha R. Arledge who served in the Civil War (SC Inf. Hampton Legion Co. I)? Probably so, though perhaps his son if he had a son named Jeptha R.

In 1856, he went to TX, but returned two years later to Franklin Co, TN. Served in CSA in Co F Turney's First TN from 1861-1862 as Captain; resigned in 1862 on account of temporary loss of sight in both eyes (and perpetual blindness in one eye) (Goodspeed's, p. 821).
With James H. Thompson and John D. Bell, was Captain of the Company F from Franklin County, TN, part of Col. Peter Turney's First Tennessee Infantry. "Also called 1st Confederate Infantry and 1st Tennessee Volunteer Infantry (Prov). This unit should not be confused with a 1st Tennessee Infantry that served in the Western theater under Gen. Braxton Bragg."
Records filed as 1st (Turney's) Tennessee Infantry Regiment. Organized at Winchester, Franklin County, TN, April 29, 1861; mustered into Confederate service at Lynchburg, VA, May 8, 1861; surrendered at Appomattox Courthouse April 9, 1865. The web page http://www.keathleywebs.com/1st_tenn.htm provides a history of this Regiment:
"Practically simultaneously with the holding of a mass meeting in Winchester on February 24, 1861, at which Franklin County petitioned to be allowed to secede from Tennessee and join Alabama, then a Confederate State, Peter Turney commenced the organization of a company in Winchester, which was later to become "C" Company. Shortly thereafter, other companies were formed in and around Winchester and in the neighboring counties of Coffee and Grundy. Quickly after the fall of Fort Sumter came the formation of four other companies to complete the regiment.
On April 21, Colonel Turney reported to the Confederate War Department that his regiment was organized, although without weapons. On April 28, the regiment was assembled at Winchester, bivouacking on the grounds of Mary Sharp College; on May 1, it departed by rail for the Virginia theater. Six companies arrived at Lynchburg, Virginia, on May 5; the remainder of the regiment shortly thereafter, when the regiment was sworn into the Confederate service.
On May 17, the regiment was moved by rail to Richmond, where it went into training camp, to be drilled by the detachment of cadets from the Virginia Military Institute.
On June 1, the regiment moved by rail to Harper's Ferry, there to be under the command of Brig. General Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson. In July, it was moved to the locale of Manassas and, for the Battle of First Manassas, was part of the 3rd Brigade (Bernard E. Bee), Johnston's Division. The regiment remained in the Manassas area until about September 30, when it moved to duty along the Potomac, between Occoquan and Aquia Creeks. On January 10, 1862, it was part of the task force of Brig. General William H.C. Whiting, at Dumfries, Virginia, being placed, on February 9, under the command of Maj. General Theophilus H. Holmes, commanding the Aquia District. At the same time, the 1st Tennessee Infantry (Maney), 2nd Tennessee Infantry (Bate), and 3rd Tennessee Infantry (J.C. Vaughn), were detached from the Army of Northern Virginia and returned to the Tennessee Theater, leaving the 1st Confederate Infantry, the 7th Tennessee Infantry, and the 14th Tennessee Infantry as components of a brigade which was to serve, with minor changes from time to time, during the rest of the war, and which was to become known as the Tennessee Brigade, Army of Northern Virginia.
Organization of the Tennessee Brigade was announced on March 8, 1862. It's first commander was Brig. General Samuel R. Anderson; his headquarters were at Evansport, now Quantico, Virginia. On March 8, 1862, the brigade was assigned to the division of Brig. General William H.C. Whiting.
Under General Anderson, the brigade entered the Peninsular Campaign as part of A.P. Hill's "Light Division" of Magruder's Corps. It's initial position was about midway between the York and James Rivers. Here the regiment was reorganized; General Anderson was relieved from active field service by reason of ill health (he was 58 years old and was serving in his second war), and the brigade command passed to Brig. General Robert H. Hatton, formerly colonel of the 7th Tennessee Infantry.
General Hatton was killed in the fighting near Fair Oaks Station, May 31, 1862. By the time the brigade entered the Battle of Gaines' Mill, June 27, it had a new brigade commander. This was Brig. General James J. Archer; he was to retain command with several absences until January, 1865. Under him the brigade was to make it's reputation.
As part of the Fifth (Archer's) Brigade, A.P. Hill's "Light Division", Magruder's Corps, the regiment participated in the Seven Day's Battles before Richmond. It's regimental flag was captured at Gaines' Mill by the 13th New York Infantry. As part of the same brigade and division, but now part of the II Corps (Thomas J. Jackson), Army of Northern Virginia, it participated in Jackson's Valley Campaign at Cedar Run, moving from there to the actions at Orange Courthouse, Manassas Junction, and Second Manassas.
In September, the regiment, still in the II Corps, took part in the Maryland Campaign, fighting at Harper's Ferry, Sharpsburg, and Shepherdstown. Returning to Virginia, it was part of the II Corps at the Battle of Fredericksburg. Here Colonel Turney sustained the wound which removed him from active command; a year later he was to take over a semi-administrative command in Florida.
During 1863, the regiment, now commanded by Lt. Colonel N.J. George, continued as part of Archer's Brigade, but the division was commanded by Henry Heth and the Corps was now the III, commanded by A.P. Hill after the fall of Jackson at Chancellorsville. It participated in the Gettysburg Campaign, where it was on the left flank during Pickett's Charge on Jul 3, 1863. The 1st and 7th Tennessee Infantry Regiments were the only units to breach the Federal lines that day, but at a high price; the Brigade Commander, the Regimental Commander, a large number of other officers and enlisted men, and the colors of the 1st and 14th Regiments, were captured by the 14th Connecticut Infantry.
With Brig. General Henry H. Walker in command of the brigade, it participated in the actions of the Army of Northern Virginia throughout the remainder of 1863; these included the Mine Run Campaign and the Battle of Bristoe Station. Major Felix G. Buchanan commanded the regiment.
As part of Archer's Brigade, later to be known as Fry's Brigade, made by combining the brigades of Archer and Fields, the regiment took part in the Battles in The Wilderness and at Spottsylvania Courthouse in May, 1864. By August, 1864, Colonel George had returned to command the regiment. By this time the regiment, still a part of Hill's III Corps, had moved through the Battle of Cold Harbor into the bloody stalemate of Petersburg, which continued until early April, 1865. General Archer had returned to his old command briefly in August; the illnesses brought on by his long confinement at Johnson's Island shortly forced his retirement; he died at Richmond in October. Captain William S. Daniel commanded the regiment until the return of Colonel George.
In January, 1865, consolidation of the diminished strength of the Army of Northern Virginia brought about the formation of Archer's and Johnson's Brigade, still in Heth's Division of the III Corps. Beside this regiment were it's old companions of the original Tennessee Brigade, the 7th and the 14th Tennessee Infantry, plus the 2nd Maryland Infantry Battalion, the 17th/23rd Tennessee Infantry, the 25th/44th Tennessee Infantry, and the 63rd Tennessee Infantry.
Withdrawing toward Appomattox early in April, the brigade came under the command of Brig. General William McComb; Major Felix G. Buchanan was now in command of the regiment. This was the composition of the brigade as it passed out of existence with Lee's Surrender."
Clem Arledge served as Franklin Co, TN Clerk of Court 1871-1882. In January 1883 he was appointed Clerk and Master of Franklin County Chancery Court. He was a Democrat. (Franklin County Historical Record June 1971; information provided by Alice Street)

[He married (1) SOPHIA A. ???. She was born 1818 in listed as wife in 1850 Limestone AL census: may be mistranscribed from Lydia.] He married (2) LYDIA ANN JUDITH SLAUGHTER44,45,46,47 September 26, 1833 in Limestone County, AL47. She was born April 24, 1818 in Anson CO, NC d/o James & Sara Wade Slaughter, and died March 16, 1871 in Fannin County, TX (Buried in Arledge Ridge Cemetery, Fannin County, TX)48,49.
The following information was researched and contributed by Mary Jane Arledge Murray:
JOSEPH CYRUS and LYDIA ANN SLAUGHTER ARLEDGE
JOSEPH CYRUS ARLEDGE, b. 10-19-1812, Chester County, SC, was the son of Cyrus and Lucy Featherstone Arledge. His family moved to Limestone County, AL between 1814-1818. He married Lydia Ann Slaughter on September 29, 1833. He was 21, she was only 15. Their first child was born the next year. After the middle of 1850, probably between 1851-1853, they moved to Fannin County, TX. It is not known if all their connected families moved to TX at the same time. Youngest brother, John, moved to Crockett, Houston County, TX in 1853. Closest brother, William, moved to Fannin County, TX, after the birth of his youngest daughter who is listed as born in Limestone County, AL in 1857. Their aged mother also moved to TX in those years. (See John Arledge)
Joseph and William farmed the bottom blackland south of Bonham and south of Bois d'Arc Creek. William was married to Lydia's sister, Mary W. Slaughter, and they had eleven children. They lived on what was called Arledge Ridge, where they had a cotton gin, a store, and there were a church, a school, a blacksmith shop, and later a cemetery. Farther north, on William's land was a "slave" cemetery. Neither was listed in censuses as having slaves, but they did have hired hands, probably black, who probably took their name, as there were later listed Arleges and Arlidges living in Fannin County. There is still a cemetery and a church on Arledge Ridge on Hwy. 78, four miles south of Bonham.
Joseph Cyrus was a trustee in the First Baptist church of Bonham. He died on January 27, 1855. Lydia was 35 and her oldest boy almost 16. Joseph is buried in the Arledge Ridge Cemetery.
LYDIA ANN SLAUGHTER, b. April 24, 1818, NC, evidently managed the family farm all right with her oldest children. In the 1860 census she was listed as head of household and worth $8000 in land and $1000 in property. Her oldest son was married and on his own. In 1870 she lived in Bonham with her yougest son, a daughter and son-in-law. Her house was worth $2500. The oldest son was probably on the farm, or part of it. Lydia died March 16, 1871, and is buried on Arledge Ridge Cemetery beside her husband.

He was married to Lydia Ann SLAUGHTER on 26 Sep 1833 in Limestone County, AL. Lydia Ann SLAUGHTER was born on 24 Apr 1818 in North Carolina. She died on 16 Mar 1871 in Fannin County, TX (Buried in Arledge Ridge Cemetery, Fannin County, TX). Lydia Ann is the sister to Mary W. Slaughter. Her step-father's surname is Levin Gray. Upon the death of her father, Andrew J. Edmondson was appointed her guardian (Source: "Gray, Powers and Interrelated Families", Ames, 1992, p. 94.) Joseph Arledge was appointed guardian of his wife's half sister, Margaret Gray, a minor child. (Source: "Gray, Powers and Interrelated Families", Ames, 1992, p. 94.)
Bob Arledge wrote about the dual wive's names:
Pam, It is my theory that this is some type of transcribing error. I believe Sophia A., who is listed as 32 years old, is actually Lydia Ann Judith Slaughter Arledge. Sometimes a manuscript S and L are confused. I am not sure about the "o", perhaps the "p" was a "y", and perhaps the "h" was a "d". Now the reason I came to this conclusion is that the S.C. Gray (21 year old male, born in AL) is most likely "Levin Covey Gray" (age about right). He is the older brother of Margaret (16 F AL) and Martha (14 F AL) and the son of Sarah (56 F NC). My records show them living next door with Joseph Cyrus Arledge as a guardian. The census taker also transcribed Joseph Cyrus Arledge's name as Joseph Cyrus Aldridge, which had clearly been Arledge well before this time. (Also, is it possible that Sophia could be a nickname for Lydia?) Below is what I have in my database for Sarah H.(olden) Wade and Levin Gray (Her first husband was James Slaughter and she shortly married an older man, Levin Gray.):

Below is some additional information I found pertaining not to Lydia Ann Judith Slaughter or "Sophia" (transcribe error probably), but of her mother's remarriage, death of her second husband Levin Gray, and subsequent guardianship of children, etc. This information was researched by my cousin, Mary Jane Arledge Murray. Bob Arledge
<< It would appear that Sarah H. Wade Slaughter married Levin Gray very soon after James Slaughter's death in 1827, as their son, Levin Covey Gray, was born in Jan., 1828. However, inventory and sale of James Slaughter's estate listed Levin Gray as administrator and Sarah Slaughter as executrix on March 5, 1829; then on Dec. 28, 1829, they filed final settlement of the estate as husband and wife. Levin Gray was thirty years older than Sarah. Levin Gray died intestate in 1836. Sarah was allotted one third of his estate. The remainder went to his son, Thomas, by his first marriage, and the five children Sarah bore him. Joseph Cyrus Arledge was appointed guardian of Margaret Gray, William Arledge was appointed guardian of Martha Gray, Cyrus Arledge was appointed guardian of Sarah Matilda Gray, and Howell Featherston was appointed guardian of Levin Covey Gray and George Wade Gray. The 1840 census of Limestone County, AL, showed Sarah H. Gray as head of household with five children living with her. The 1850 census of Limestone County, AL, showed her living with son, Levin Covey Gray, next door to Joseph Cyrus Arledge's home. A letter to her sister, Mary W. Hendricks of Athens, AL, and dated December 2, 1862 from Bonham, Nolan County, TX with daughter Mary Slaughter Arledge. Sarah died in Fannin County, TX and is buried in the Arledge Ridge Cemetery, near Mary's and Lydia's graves. >>

p. 12 ARLEDGE RIDGE CEMETERY. Background: This cemetery in Fannin County 8 miles south of Bonham, Texas on State Highway 11, has a Texas Historical Commission Marker which reads:
ARLEDGE RIDGE CEMETERY
Among the early settlers of this area were Joseph and William Arledge, brothers, who arrived from Alabama in the 1850s. Both established successful farms in the area, and the growing settlement became known as Arledge Ridge. Joseph Arledge operated one of the earliest freight lines in Fannin County with regular routes to the port city of Jefferson. William Arledge established a cotton gin in the central part of the county and later sold an acre of land to be used for a community school and church.
A tract of land, deeded by William Arledge in 1876, was designated as a community burial ground. According to local tradition, burials may have taken place in the cemetery as early as the 1850's but the oldest documented grave is that of Joseph Arledge who died in 1855.
Interred in the Arledge Ridge Cemetery are many early settlers, as well as a number of Civil War veterans. Additional land acquisitions in 1893, 1948, and 1969 enlarged the cemetery tract. The Arledge Ridge Cemetery Association, organized in 1948 maintains the historic graveyard and sponsors an annual homecoming event.

20. WILLIAM /8 ARLEDGE (CYRUS7, CLEMENT6, ISAAC5, WILLIAM4 ALDRIDGE, CLEMENT3, CLEMENT2, JOHN ALDRICH/1)65,66,67,68 was born November 18, 1814 in Chester Co, South Carolina; HOH 1850 Limestone Co, AL69, and died November 16, 1894 in Bur. Arledge Ridge Cemetary (near Bonham, Fannin Co, TX). He married MARY W. SLAUGHTER /70,71,72 January 10, 1837 in Limestone County, AL73,74, daughter of JAMES SLAUGHTER and SARAH WADE. She was born October 28, 1819 in Anson Co, NC, d/o James Slaughter & Sarah Wade, and died February 21, 1876 in Bonham, Fannin County, TX.
Following the death of William's father in 1852, William and Mary and their family moved to Texas from Limestone County, AL, and bought land near the Bois d'Arc Creek about 3 miles south of Bonham, TX. More land was bought until the Arledge land holdings at one time amounted to about 1000 acres on Arledge Ridge. There were two Arledge Ridge schools; the white school was 4.5 miles south of Bonham, and the colored school was 3.5 miles southeast of Bonham. Both schools served as churches for any denomination. The white school was sold to the Primitive Baptist Church, and is still in service (1992). In 1866, William built a two-story house that was a showplace of the county. There were two cemeteries, white and colored. The old part of the cemetery was deeded by William. The graves in the slave gravyard are unmarked. Mary died February 21, 1876 and William died November 16, 1894, both in Fannin Co., TX and are buried under a single monument in the Arledge Ridge Cemetery. Today, the cemetery is all that is left of the community, except for the school building which is used as a community club house. Part of William's house is a section of a barn on the farm of Ray Taylor. ("Gray, Powers, and Interrelated Families", Ames, 1992, p. 95)

Sarah H. Gray's letter of 1862 states that "a regement of soldiers left this camp yesterday to go to Kentucky. William's son, John Wade Arledge, belonged to one of the companys. It is a great grief to the family..." A John Arledge was a private in the "Fannin Cavaliers" organized at Bonham June 25, 1861. This unit was later absorbed into the Cavalry Co. of 14th Brigade, Texas Militia. John Wade Arledge died in 1862, probably a casualty of the Civil War. He married (2) ANN FRANCES CAMPBELL /116 1869 in Houston County, TX, daughter of JOSEPH CAMPBELL and SARAH ???. She was born February 1829 in TN d/o Joseph Campbell.
John F. Arledge and Harriett came to Texas from Lawrence County, Alabama, They had 13 children. John led a caravan from Alabama to a site S.E. of Crockett, Texas, where they established a plantation. They later moved to Crockett. John remarried in 1869 to the widow of his cousin Coleman, Ann Arledge, when Harriett died. Ann Arledge was from Tennessee.
There are two surveys in the Houston County Land records with John's name on them: the survey numbers are A-126 and A-130. Highway 7 cuts through the middle of one of these. Was one of these sites the location of the original plantation he established in 1853?
John F. Arledge settled in Crockett, Houston County, TX in November 1853 with seven of his thirteen children. He managed the Sam Pointer Jones (father-in-law) plantation at Randolph and Cocino. He also fought in the Civil War.

Claire Younkin replied:
When I read the film of that census, I thought that what is frequently read AB Jones, was SP in very poor writing....the children in that household fit those of Samuel Pointer Jones and his wife had just died (ca. 1858/59) and Lucy , mother of John F. had come to Texas with Her son, as had John F.'s inlaws...Samuel Pointer and Mary(Polly) Wright Jones. That area of Houston County is where our gr grandfather had first lived...(we Craddock girls still own some property there, inherited down through Henry Jones Arledge) I figure that Lucy had moved next door to help with the S.P.Jones household following Polly's death....S.P. moved back to Alabama before very many more years, where he died. It it also my opinion that the James T. is a census taker's error...there are too many similarities in names of children of John Fisher Arledge, ages of Harriet, etc. John Fisher isn't found anywhere else in Houston County in that census , is he?
Clay Fulcher wrote:
Here is a possible explanation of the James T. Arledge shown in the census:
We know that this James T. Arledge wasn't John Fisher Arledge because John Fisher Arledge was born in 1819, making him 41 yrs old in 1860. The census shows James T. to be 60 yrs old. Yet, he is designated as the head of household of what is obviously John Fisher Arledge's family (the kids listed). John Fisher was therefore gone. Where was he? We know that John Fisher Arledge was a spy for the Confederacy, but the war didn't actually start until 1861. I suppose it is possible that he was getting started fighting the Yankees a little early?? Heck, why not, those Yanks are an ornery bunch aren't they (tweak tweak)? Anyway, he was GONE when the census was taken, and a relative by the name of James T. Arledge was taking care of his family while he was gone. This James T. was born in 1800, and it is possible that he is the James, son of Isaac, son of Isaac....making James T. Arledge the first cousin of Cyrus Arledge. He isn't the second cousin of John F.--but any children of James T. would have been John Fisher's second cousins. I don't know what the relationship between James T. Arledge and John Fisher Arledge is called (if this scenario is correct).

Pam....Just last night when I was working on Aunt HBM's [Hattie Belle Arledge Milburn] records I transcribed these notes from one of her notebooks......: There was also more of his actual letter quoted....I'll add that too soon as I can find it:
JOHN F. ARLEDGE joined the many volunteers from Houston County when the CIVIL WAR broke out. He was at CAMP CEDAR BAYOU, January 21, 1864. He was in charge of ammunitions, and in the distribution of ammunition to the company. The FORT (evidently Fort Houston) must not have been far from Camp Cedar BAYOU. JOHN F. ARLEDGE served with Company A, 35 Texas Cavalry, W.B. WALL, Captain of Post 2nd Master, Crockett, Texas. This was in the 2nd Sub-District, 4th Colony district.
He wrote of the bitterly cold and freezing weather they were having in camp. He spoke of standing guard on one of these occasions; and of one man being exposed to the cold "freezing to death" while on guard. At any rate, SOMETIME AFTER THAT (because of his illness) he was discharged to serve better, in his condition, on the home-front....as "collector of Tax, in kind": for a period of time.
31. Handwritten exerpts from letter from John F. Arledge while at Camp Cedar Payou, Jan 21st,1864. Capt. Black Officer in charge John F. spoke of Dr. Gary. They had beef and bread, draw sugar and molasses once a week. Sometimes potatoes. Most of the company went down to the Fort last week. "The Captain has given me charge of the ammunition and I have distributed the cartridges to our company and that relieves me from all guard duty which is quite a relief sometimes for instance, standing such nights as Christmas Eve and New Years' Eve which I stood. On New Year's night one man was said to have frozen on post duty as he died on the next day" " All the Boys from our county are well, I believe, except Abe English has been complaining every since we got in camp" signed J.F. Arledge

Notes for HARRIETT ELIZA(BETH) JONES: From Old Randol--- near Kennard, Houston County, Texas.
There is an interesting entry in Franklin Aldridge's book. It is a census entry, and it is as follows:
1860 Census Houston County Texas #237 -- JAS. T. ARLEDGE 60 m far. $9,300 7,250 Ala; Harriet 38 f Ala; Mary 18 f Ala; Sarah 15 f Ala; Samuel 12 m Ala; Jas. 9 m Ala; Harriet 7 f Texas; Jno. 4 m Texas; Lewis 1 m Texas. #238 -- LUCY ARLEDGE 77 f S. C. living in home of A. B. JONES (Most of film unreadable).
Harriet, and her children Mary, Sarah, and Samuel are readily identified as wife and children of John Fisher ARLEDGE. The ages of James, Harriet, and John don't agree with my other records, but these are probably children of J. F. ARLEDGE as well. I have no record of Lewis ARLEDGE as a son of J. F. ARLEDGE. Lucy is Lucy FEATHERSTON ARLEDGE, mother of John Fisher ARLEDGE, and grandmother to these children.
Harriet was JONES and so this A. B. JONES was probably a relative of Harriet's family.
Note that there is an ALFRED B. M. JONES who married MARGARET GRAY in Limestone County, Al., in 1851. Joseph Cyrus ARLEDGE, John Fisher ARLEDGE's brother, was made guardian to this Margaret GRAY upon the death of her father, Levin GRAY.
Who was JAS. T. ARLEDGE? I have no record of him anywhere.

Is this the same JF Arledge? If so, how was he counted in the 1870 census? There are evidently at least two JF Arledges.
