Vampire: the Masquerade is the story of the political and violent lives of those creatures that call themselves "the Kindred." Decended from the curse of Caine, their Generation belies their powers: higher gens, like 12th or 11th are much weaker than 8th or 7th as they are that much further removed from the source.

Kindred seperate themselves into three factions: the Camarilla, who's goals are to live amongst the Kine (mortals) as one of them, and enforce the Masquerade--the necessity of acting human to survive their wrath. Sabbat believe that Kine are merely food and do not respect the Masquerade. Anarchs are those who rebell against the power of the elders and the strictness of the Traditions, or Vampiric laws. Each faction wars constantly with one another, never quite getting along. "Antitribu" are Kindred who change affiliations.

The Camarilla Clans are:
Toreador--artists and gossips
Ventrue--leaders and buisnessmen
Brujah--rebels with a cause
Tremere--wizards and scholars
Malkavian--insane and liking it
Nosferatu--ugly secret-mongers

The Sabbat Clans:
Lesombra--weavers of dogma and shadow
Tzimisce--hideous shapers of flesh and bone

The Independants (neither Cam nor Sabbat):
Giovanni--the Family of the dead
Gangrel--beastial wanderers
Assamites--cold blooded assasins
Setites--corruptors and seductors
