RUNECRAFT
AN INTRODUCTION TO HOW I USE THE RUNESTONES
The Old Norse word 'run' means 'secret writing', and the Gothic word 'runa' has it's origins in the meaning of 'secret' and 'whisper'. From this statement alone, perhaps we can see how the word 'rune' is appropriate in using the runesones for divination and spellcraft.
The word also has Germanic roots and means 'to roar'. It has been passed through many languages and belief systems...but the core-meaning still remains the same:
"WHISPERED SECRET"
Many people used the runes to write poetry and spells, keeping the work secret in using the symbols of the runes. It was a way of protecting themselves against the intolerance of religious beliefs through misunderstanding, but also the secretiveness seemed to add to the magickal feeling of the words.
In these pages, I am not trying to impart to you the history or meaning of the runes, but give you some insight as to how I use them. Everyone who practises runecraft will do so slightly differently~adding a part of their own meaning and wishes into each casting. Much of what I have learned is from the books and writings of D.JASON  COOPER, and THE MAGICK CAULDRON, but even I can say that I add a 'twist' to using the runes that makes it personal to me. However you cast or use the runes, do so in a way that you feel comfortable with~regardless of which futhark* you use.
*  A futhark is a runic alphabet, called so because the first six letters are: F  U  TH  A  R and K. I use the Germanic, or Elder, futhark, which consists of 24 runic symbols.
The futhark is separated into three groups of eight runes, called  'Aettirs' (or 'families'). Each Aettir is attributed to a deity:
Freyja, Heimdall, and Tyr (or Tiwaz)
Before imparting more detail about the meanings of the casting of the runes, I will list each aettir and the runes therein, giving the sound of the rune, and the number and colour it represents. The sound of the rune will help when you are using the runic alphabet to cast spells, and the number and colour correspondences are important- especially when making runic talismans...I will go into this further later (SEE THE LINK BELOW)

Many Pagans who practise runecraft know much of the myth of Odin...To become adept at using the runes, one must learn all they can of Odin and the other Norse Gods. This is because the runes themselves express the personality of the God or Goddess they represent, and also by knowing the history, we are learning even more about how to use the runes, how they are to be 'read', and why they represent the facets that they do. It would take many, many pages of explaination to impart the myth of Odin, Valhalla, the Old Norse Gods and all the legends that the myth entails. There are many websites and books that can teach and tell you much more than I...and I shall list those seperately for anyone interested. HERE
