THIS IS A LIST OF THE RUNIC SYMBOLS I USE IN ROWS REPRESENTING THE THREE AETTIRS; FREYJA HEIMDALL TIWAZ |
You can make yourself a talisman for any reason whatsoever; inspiration for writing poetry, desired justice, prosperity, maintaining health, luck, ...the list is endless. The runic alphabet is just that- an alphabet...a list of symbols or letters for writing. You must keep in mind always that the futhark may only be used for good~though there is a balance of good and evil within the personality of the runes, they will only allow gain and wealth, not dominance over another, nor will the runes permit power to be used unwisely. You will only recieve as much as you allow yourself to put into the magick~ and this is a direct reference in your faith in your own abilities, the magickal power of the runes, and also the amount of energy you put into the casting or reading of the runes. |

One of the simplest ways to make a talisman is as follows: First, pick the runic symbol that best represents the basis of your desire- this you draw in the appropriate colour on on side of a piece of card or paper. The colour paper you choose is quite important, and it must be chosen like this: write out the wish in runic symbols, for instance: |
I W A N T G O O D H E A L TH 3 8 4 2 1 7 7 7 8 1 3 4 5 3 |
GOOD HEALTH |

Each of the runes has a number. Add the numbers together, i.e. 3+8+4+2+1+7+7+7+8+1+3+4+5+3 =62 Add the two digits to make one digit 6+2 =8 8 is the answer- and you have three runes which represent the number 8. You must look to see which rune that represents this number: WYNN SIGHEL DOERG to see which aettir applies to health. In this case, the rune you would have chosen to draw on the front of the paper should have been BOERC. The aettir which best deals with health would be HEIMDALL's aettir. Number eight in Heimdall's aettir is: SIGHEL, and this rune is YELLOW...so therefore your paper should be coloured yellow. |
The lettering you use should compliment the background colour. |
BLACK RED ORANGE YELLOW |
WHITE GREEN BLUE PURPLE |
IS COMPLIMENT TO |
If the background colour number turns out to be 9, then the colour must be grey. As there is no opposite complimentary colour to grey, each runic symbol must be written in its appropriate colour (for example, the letter 'W' is represented by WYNN and this rune should be written in the colour blue. |
Although this seems quite complicated at first, you will find that you pick it up quite easily after a few tries. However, as with all different Pagan Paths, you may find that you have your own preferred colour correspondences, and feel more comfortable using those that you usually do for other spellwork. There are no hard and fast rules to follow. If there is a colour you feel strongly about, and know using that colour will work for you purposes, then please use it. After making your talisman, there are several things you can do. You may wish to say aloud the words written, by light of a moon phase whch reflects the desired wish. You can ritually burn the paper, visualising the emotions, wants, feelings and desires of the talisman going out to the universe, and working well and strongly for you. Other people prefer to hold the paper, keeping it safe until the desired outcome has been fulfilled...then they may wish to burn the paper. All or some of these methods are fine to use...or you may have another ritual you prefer to do. Once again, it is personal preference which must dictate which way you should do things. |
This symbol, using the quarters and mongram, asks for protection, advice, and answers to secrets from the dead: |

Another way of making a simple talisman is to 'overlap' runes which represent your desired wish (called a 'monogram'). For instance, you may wish to protect your home and family, and you could interlock the following runes: ODEL to represent property EOHL for protection GER for family There are other combinations- pick what you feel best. With the above three runes, we could interlock them to make the following symbol: |

You can also make mongrams simply by calling the four quarters. Using only one runic symbol, EOHL, we can call for protection from the quarters by using the following symbol: |
