I'm an expert at unrequited love. I have, however, over a while, worked that out. It's about seeing this ideal that's unattainable, and you don't want to just throw those thoughts away. To see somebody that you are immediately attracted to on a number of different levels . . . you should enjoy that. You don't have to discuss it with anybody or bring it to anybody's attention, but why not just allow yourself the experience, even if the situation is incorrect?-- From an interview, regarding the lyrics for "Hold me" - from BLOC.

On his beard: "I'm just lazy,mate...And anybody who thinks it was a good idea to get up first thing in the morning and rub sharpened steel across your bare skin is an idiot."--Russell in KFOG interview on 24 Aug 2001

I prefer engaging in life rather than observing it. Get involved. Get it all over you.

I compete with my own laziness. I have a great ability to sit in a single place and do nothing for long stretches of time.

I've made some really stupid decisions in my life, and ruined relationships, by being selfish or whatever. These are universal experiences, but when you put them down from a personal perspective, it means something. ... I was not one of those people who, from a musical point of view, could immediately be really honest about how I felt about something. But you develop that, you learn that. For me now, its only the truth that matters.(Russell Crowe on writing songs and his music). The Sun Herald 11/4/01

I may work increasingly in America, but I'm an Australian through to the bone, I have no intention of doing the Mel Gibson thing. The last thing Hollywood needs is another pseudo-American Aussie action star." -- 1/5/98 Calgary Sun "Crowe Takes Off" by Louis B.Hobson

About life after death: 'I definitely believe in an afterlife. I've had a couple of experiences in my life that confirm it for me.' - Calgary Sun, March 19, 2000.
Russell on Jodie Foster:  "I was cheeky on the phone and said I needed a date for the Golden Globes and she said 'I'm your girl' so off we went. . . I had a ball. I had the best date. She let me be as silly as I want to be." (Associated Press 1/00)    "She is a cracker of a girl, she's very special." (Channel Nine's Today)

"If people want to inflate me or put me up somewhere where I don't think I belong, its a matter of torching it -- bringing it down to earth again and saying, 'Listen, I have exactly the same family structure, exactly the same problems, exactly the same levels of observation as you. Divide my characters and divide the cinema from who I am.' The thing about performing with a band: There is no safety net. If you want an exercise in bringing yourself back to earth, go on a rock and roll tour." Detour Oct. 97

On living in the bush:   "I'm at that point in my career where I'm being bombarded with offers -- and it's really fun, too. But if I ever feel I'm in danger of losing my perspective about the business of acting, I can always go home to the farm. My parents and older brother live there and they run the place when I'm away. I've set everything up at the farm so things should flow just fine when I'm away, and I try to be there when all the babies are being born -- we have horses, cows, dogs and chickens.  I'm just a big softie when it comes to the farm," he adds. "These animals are my friends, and I enjoy spending time with them because they open my mind up again when the small world of show business threatens to close it down." LA Times, 1997

"Russell Crowe is one of the best actors I've ever worked with." Box Office magazine 1997

Youki Kudoh:

SUNDANCE
Leota writes in the following about the Sundance "Texas" screening. "The theater only had about 150 seats so it was a very intimate setting. I was on the right side, 3rd row by the aisle. Mr. Crowe came in at midnight and said a few words about the film and then took a seat to my right (behind me) and watched the screening. Afterwards there was a Q&A. I actually asked him a question! I was very nervous but said "Which of your songs is your current favorite?" to which he replied "That's a very hard question, it's like trying to choose which of your 10 kids you love the best. I love them all. My favorite will probably be the next one I write."
He was very kind and answered all questions (except a few). The Q&A lasted perhaps 10 minutes. He was wearing blue jeans, black boots and a red flannel shirt and smoked the whole time. (Take THAT Utah Clean Air Act!)" (Thanks to Leota)

In Reality:  More like 250 people there.  I was on the left side, 6th row, 9th seat in from middle aisle. After the intro, he sat on the right side, 6th row, 2nd or 3rd seat in.  (On my row!)  He didn't smoke the WHOLE time. -wjw

RUSSELL Crowe (above) was in prime prickly form at the Sundance Film Festival Thursday night. At an audience Q&A following a screening of "Texas" -a concert film featuring his band, 30 Odd Foot of Grunts - the ornery Aussie snapped at several of his interrogators. "He was cutting people off and saying things like, ‘Do I look like I'm talking to you?' " says our spy. "He was like a stern schoolmaster." At a Miramax-sponsored cocktail party honoring Crowe and Nicole Kidman earlier that evening, Crowe "walked in, took a look around, and walked right out," says our spy.

In Reality:  He was not crabby at all.  He did say that, but it was in a jovial and playful manner.  He had pointed to someone to answer a question and someone else thought he had pointed to them.  This happened a couple of times, so he stated making jokes about it.- wjw

Throughout the festival, there have been times when I've been convinced the Sundance press office hates the press. Case in point: Festival personnel asked media types to line up at 10:30 at night outside the Yarrow Theater--in frosty 11-degree weather--to lob questions at Russell Crowe, who produced Texas, a documentary about his rock band 30 Odd Foot of Grunts. "It's rude and irreverent, and you get to see me do some stuff that most film companies would never want to see...that's why I love it," he said.
Speaking of rude, Crowe didn't show until nearly 11:30! But the famously ornery Aussie seemed to have caught the Sundance spirit nonetheless. Bundled in a cashmere overcoat and sporting a full beard and long curly hair, he almost cheerfully worked the line at his first Park City fest.
"I've been having a wow of a time," he said, with a grin. "I've been listening to Harvey Weinstein tell great stories over dinner."

BOO:  Nicole and Russell both had films premiering at the star-studded annual event. The Moulin Rouge actress flew in from Sweden to attend the preview of her newest endeavour, Birthday Girl. Her close chum Russell made the trip for the premiere of Texas, a documentary in which he appears with his rock group, 30 Odd Foot Of Grunts.

MUSINGS:
Recently EW ran a piece musing on the fact that despite Crowe’s hunkiness, his sex scenes always end up either not shot, as with Sharon Stone in The Quick and the Dead, or on the cutting room floor, as with Meg Ryan and Jennifer Connelly.
