On Ryan's performance in Proof of Life: Even more problematic is Ryan's performance. Crowe does a sturdy, smoldering job, but the ''Sleepless in Seattle'' starlet seems in over her perfectly tousled head. Usually, I find Ryan easier to take in dramas than romantic comedies, when she strains too hard to be cute (ironically, her finest work may be in 1993's dark, underappreciated ''Flesh and Bone,'' opposite estranged spouse Dennis Quaid). Here, she just seems snippy. It's clear what attracts Ryan's character to Crowe's strapping savior, but we have no idea why she melts his steely heart. Could it be those sad puppy eyes? - (EntertainmentWeekly - Posted:12/13/00) |
A Bit on Meg |
On Ryan's performance in You've Got Mail: Before they ever lay eyes on each other, Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan fall in love by e-mail. And when they do finally lay eyes on each other, they fall in love all over again, because, hey, he looks like Tom Hanks and she's sparkly Meg Ryan. That's one way to tell that "You've Got Mail" -- the new romantic comedy from Nora Ephron, who previously had her stars meet cute in "Sleepless in Seattle" -- is a romantic fantasy. Realists like you and me, though, we know that Meg doesn't have a prayer with Tom in the real world -- and not just because her twirly-girly mannerisms have been known to cause seizures similar to those experienced by Kramer when he was exposed to Mary Hart's voice on "Seinfeld." The real problem, we know, is that Meg is a Mac PowerBook Person; Tom is an IBM ThinkPad Guy. And not even Romeo and Juliet faced so fundamental a romantic challenge..........
