South African War (Boer War)

October 1899-May 1902, ten NZ contingents of volunteers, about 6500 men (and 8000 horses), fought against the Boer armies. A total of 228 New Zealanders died during the war - 70 in action, 133 from disease and 25 in accidents. Medical and veterinary teams from NZ also served, and groups of teachers worked with Boer children in prisoner-of-war camps and internment camps. The ninth and tenth contingents saw little action as they arrived only a short time before the war ended.

Lest We Forget

They shall not grow old

as we that are left grow old

Age shall not weary them,

nor the years condemn

At the going down of the sun,

and in the morning,

we will remember them

''Those heroes that shed their blood and lost their lives.....You are now lying in the soil of a friendly country. There forever rest in peace. There is no difference between the Johnnies and the Mehmets, to us, where they lie side by side, here, in this country of ours..... You, the mothers, who sent their sons from far away countries, wipe away your tears; your sons are now lying in our bosom and are in peace. After having lost their lives on this land, they have become our sons as well.''

- Mustafa Kemal ATATURK
