On the day of William Hills` Greyhound Derby final, Greyhound Action supporters picketted betting shops across the country, in order to educate punters about the death and suffering of dogs at the hands of the greyhound racing industry and to persuade them (if they must gamble) to bet instead on activities (e.g. football and cricket) which do not involve animals.

In Birmingham, 9 protesters met up at 12 noon and their first stop was William Hill on New Street. This was a great place to start as it was so busy with shoppers, many of them happy to take leaflets and learn the reason for the demo. Protesters were astounded when William Hill staff offered to bring out refreshments! And sure enough, 5 minutes later, out came the tea, soft drinks and crisps!! So it seems even the staff are disgusted at the appalling suffering their industry is responsible for! After 45 minutes on New Street, protesters moved on to Ladbrokes, a short walk down the road.

Although not as busy as New Street, many people showed support for the demo and signed the petition to call for a ban on greyhound racing. After Ladbrokes, protesters turned their attention to a nearby branch of Coral where once again, lots of leaflets were handed out and more support gained from the public. To finish off, 2 more branches of William Hill were visited. |

In total, the demo lasted around 3 hours during which time several hundred leaflets were handed out and many 1000`s of people saw the banners and now have some idea of the suffering involved in the greyhound racing industry. Dozens of people approached protesters during the demo and offered donations and nearly £30 was collected altogether! After such a successful day, protesters pledged to hold similar demos in the future. And there`s lots more going on in the Midlands if you want to get involved. The weekly Sunday demos continue outside Coventry Greyhound Track at Brandon.
