The three branches of the Kaleidoscope program -- sports, swimming and teen program, help children foster independence while they play. The program, held Saturdays at the West Morris YMCA in Randolph, offers special needs children, ages 5 to18, a nurturing and fun environment in which to build strong minds, bodies and spirits. Swimmers work one on one with volunteers to learn the basics while teens enjoy fun and/or educational day trips to the movies, the Bronx Zoo, rafting down the Delaware and more. Sports participants get their fill of volleyball, softball and basketball, among other playful activities. Special events like aerobics, karate and holiday parties let everyone enjoy a kaleidoscope of activities Saturdays year-round. Volunteers from high schools, colleges, churches and scout groups to local business people and retirees act as mentors and are the program's lifeblood. Like the children, they teach and have fun while they learn, grow and flourish. Kaleidoscope relies heavily on the generosity of volunteers and community support, as well as private and corporate donors. Fund raising events like hot dog sales, 50/50's, and annual golf-outings help, too, but there's always more to be done.
