Dear Friends, De Colores! For thirty years my life has been touched by the experience of Cursillo. At the conclusion of a Cusillo for which I was spiritual director, a friend of mine put into words what the experience has meant to me: "A little bit of heaven." My own observation throughout these years is that through Cursillo people have discovered what it means to be fully alive in Christ. It provides the basics of the Christian message and is a great launching pad for understanding how important it is that each Christian use the gifts God has given us in our world today. Cursillo's origins in post World War II Spain were an effort to get people more involved in the life of the Church and in particular their own parishes. The three days are meant to lead to a new commitment to apostolic action and Christianization of the environments that make up our daily life. In the Diocese of Western New York I am calling our people to remember that we are "One Church embracing and living into the "Dream of God." For me this means our call to know and experience our oneness in Christ and our unity with one another throughout the diocese. We learn the meaning of the "dream of God" from the whole Biblical story. We learn of a loving God who constantly seeks to draw us deeper into that love. The Cursillo method of concentration on our life in Christ through piety, study, and action represents a wondrous reflection of the Baptismal Covenant. Through the ongoing support system that is the essence of Cursillo we are drawn into small communities that have the potntial of constantly challenging us to go deeper into the mystery of Christ and to allow our faith to become daily renewed and more enjoyable. Yours in Christ, Michael The Right Reverend J. Michael Garrison Bishop of Western New York |
