Alcohol Class: Depressant AKA: beer, wine, liquor What is it? Alcohol is the product of the fermentation of fruits or grains. How do you take it: People drink it. Did you know? Alcohol is the single most abused substance in the U.S. Effects: Short-term: The effects of alcohol depend on a variety of factors, including weight, age and sex, as well as the amount of food and alcohol the person drinking consumes. Many people use alcohol in social situations because it makes them feel more comfortable and relaxed. Drinking alcohol can make people lose their inhibitions (that is, do stuff they normally wouldn't), slur their speech, get dehydrated, judge situations poorly, become uncoordinated, throw up, black out or become unconscious. Drinking also increases the chances of having an accident and getting injured. If you drink a lot, you'll probably have a headache and feel nauseous the next morning from the dehydration and alcohol withdrawal. Hello, hangover. Long-term: If you start to abuse alcohol, you can build up a tolerance to it that will require you to drink more and more to get the same buzz. Long-term heavy drinking can slow down your mental and physical bodily functions and cause heart disease, high blood pressure, depression, addiction (alcoholism) and cirrhosis of the liver. If you're dependent on or addicted to alcohol, stopping cold turkey can cause withdrawal symptoms, including severe anxiety, tremors, hallucinations and convulsions. Also, drinking when you're pregnant can cause your baby to have fetal alcohol syndrome. |

Amphetamines Class: Stimulant AKA: bennies, black beauties, dexies, jollies, speed [amphetamines], uppers, ups, wake ups What is it? An amphetamine is a drug that stimulates the central nervous system. How do you take it: It's taken in a tablet or pill form. It can also be inhaled, injected or swallowed. Did you know? During World War II, amphetamines were given to soldiers and pilots to keep them awake and alert. Effects: Short-term: You may get more talkative and experience feelings of exhilaration. You may also become aggressive. Your breathing rate, heart rate and blood pressure may rise, and you can suffer from a reduced appetite, dilated pupils, hallucinations and compulsive, repetitive action. Other effects of large doses can include fever and sweating, dry mouth, headache, paleness, blurred vision, dizziness, irregular heartbeat, tremors, loss of coordination or collapse. Long-term: Possible effects include dependence and tolerance, which means you would have to keep taking more of the drug to get the same effect. You can also become violent and aggressive and experience malnutrition due to suppression of appetite. Amphetamines can be addictive. |

Cocaine & Crack Class: Stimulant AKA: coke, snow, blow, toot, nose candy, flake, "the lady" What is it? Cocaine and crack are derivatives of the coca plant. How do you take it: You sniff coke; you smoke crack (rock) in a pipe. Did you know? in the late 1800s, Coca-Cola contained cocaine. Effects: Short-term: About one minute after sniffing it (or after 10 seconds if you're smoking it), you feel alert, energetic, strong and intelligent. The high lasts 15 to 30 minutes, depending on how it's taken. Taking cocaine can increase your blood pressure and heart rate, give you insomnia, make you lose your appetite and cause your muscles to tense up. You can experience a"crash," or a sudden and profound sense of depression, when the drug wears off, which may be followed by a feeling of paranoia. Long-term: In order to avoid the"crash" of coming down from a cocaine high, you may binge on cocaine for days at a time. Intense physical and mental cravings for the drug are common, since coke and crack can be addictive (crack, in particular, can be extremely addictive). With cocaine bingeing, you can start exhibiting symptoms of anxiety and paranoia. Long-term cocaine use can give you high blood pressure and increase your chances of having a stroke or heart attack. Prolonged coke sniffing can cause open sores or holes in the nose and nasal cavity, and can damage the septum enough to make it collapse. |

DXM Class: No Classification AKA: Dex, DXM, Robo, Tussin, Dextromethorphan What is it? DXM is a legal, semi-synthetic narcotic found in many cough suppressants on pharmacy shelves. DXM is in all drugs that have DM or Tuss in their names. How do you take it: It's swallowed. Did you know? DXM pills are often sold as ecstasy. Effects: Short-term: DXM takes you outside of your everyday reality for a while. You won't have full control of your body's movement. While people use DXM for its escape-from-reality effect, it also means they can't deal with emergency situations. DXM may also cause you to experience sweating, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, seizures, confusion, high blood pressure, headache, blurred vision, an irregular heartbeat, numb fingers and toes, hyperactivity, and hallucinations. Long-term: The long-term effects of DXM are unknown |

Ecstasy/MDMA Class: Stimulant AKA: E, X, MDMA, XTC, love drug, doves, adam, bean, roll What is it? Ecstasy is a chemical compound called 3-4, methylene-dioxymethamphetamine. How do you take it: It's taken in a pill, which may have pictures, symbols or company logos on it. Did you know? Ecstasy is sometimes called the "hug drug" because it heightens the sense of touch. Effects: Short-term: After about a half-hour, you feel energetic and happy. Your heart rate and respiration rate increase, and you can feel nauseous and become uncoordinated. You can also get dehydrated and experience dry mouth, especially if you're involved in a physical activity like dancing. Although some say taking ecstasy enhances sex, an increased sensitivity along with a loss of inhibitions can lead to unwise choices, like having unprotected sex. The drug, combined with the hot, crowded conditions at raves or parties can lead to dehydration, hypothermia, and heart or kidney failure. Long-term: Recent research findings link ecstasy to long-term damage to those parts of the brain critical to thought and memory. Chronic use of MDMA was found, first in laboratory animals and more recently in humans, to produce long-lasting, perhaps permanent, damage to the neurons that release serotonin, and consequent memory impairment. Also, most (about 70 percent) of the ecstasy sold on the street isn't really ecstasy. People sell anything and everything - from aspirin to dog-worming pills - as ecstasy, and some of what gets sold is dangerous. |

LSD Class: Hallucinogen AKA: Acid, cid, blotter, illusion, doses, Microdot, sugar cubes, tabs What is it? LSD is a synthetic chemical, lysergic acid diethylamide. How do you take it: LSD crystals can come on blotter paper or sugar cubes. It can also be found in liquid form. Did you know ? Dr. Timothy Leary summed up the popularity of LSD in the 1960s by advising the counterculture to "tune in, turn on and drop out." The drug regained popularity in the late 1980s among those in the acid-house club scene. Effects: Short-term: About 30 to 60 minutes after taking LSD, you may begin to feel happy and experience changes in the ways you see, hear and touch things. You may start seeing or hearing things wrong, or believing in things that don't exist. You may also experience"trailers," which are trails of light following a moving object. An LSD trip can last up to 12 hours. You may feel dizzy, experience high blood pressure, suffer from insomnia, show bad judgment and lose the ability to speak in coherent sentences. It can also cause severe attacks of panic and fear (also known as having a bad trip). You might also feel several different emotions at once or swing rapidly from one emotion to another, because LSD affects your sense of time and self. If you have a bad trip, you can experience a "crossover" effect, where you think you're hearing colors and seeing sounds - this can be exciting and enjoyable, or frightening and panic-inducing. Long-term: People can experience flashbacks to a bad trip they had months or years before and experience those feelings again |

How do you take it: By smoking the leaves, stem or buds in a cigarette (called a joint), a pipe or a water pipe (called a bong). Marijuana can also be eaten, usually in something like brownies. Did you know ? THC, the main psychoactive component in marijuana, can stay in your body for weeks after you take it, so even though you're not high anymore you can still fail a drug test. Effects: Short-term: Smoking pot can make you feel relaxed and dreamy (also known as being stoned or high). It can also make you feel silly, happy or hungry. Smoking pot can make people think less clearly and have problems with memory, learning and problem solving, become paranoid, cough, lose coordination and feel sleepy or confused. Long-term: Just like smoking cigarettes, long-term pot smoking can cause bronchitis or lung cancer. Some long-term pot smokers say they suffer from a lack of motivation and no longer have the ability to concentrate for long periods of time. |

Effects: Short-term: About an hour after eating shrooms, you may start seeing or hearing things incorrectly, believing things wrong or seeing things that don't exist. The effects of eating shrooms usually last about two hours. You can get nauseous or throw up, especially if you take a lot. You may also experience upsetting illusions, delusions, hallucinations, sweating, nervousness and paranoia. PCP (Phencyclidine) Class: Depressant AKA: angel dust, embalming fluid, killer weed, rocket fuel, supergrass What is it? PCP was originally developed for medical use as an intravenous anesthetic. How do you take it: It's sold as pills or as powder that dissolves in water. You can sprinkle it on various types of leaves and smoke it. It can also be snorted or swallowed. Sometimes, drug dealers lace marijuana, LSD or methamphetamine with PCP. Did you know? The government put an end to its use in humans in 1965, because many people became agitated, delusional or irrational during withdrawal. Effects: Short-term: Like Ketamine, PCP has a"disassociation" effect that can make you feel separate from or foreign to the world around you. With low doses of PCP, you may experience a slight increase in your breathing rate, blood pressure, and pulse rate. Your respiration can become shallow, and you can become flushed or start sweating. Some people feel a bit numb or lose muscle control. In high doses, you can experience a drop in blood pressure, pulse rate, and respiration, along with nausea, vomiting, blurred vision, drooling, loss of balance and dizziness. If that's not enough, add illusions and hallucinations to the list. PCP's effects can mimic symptoms of schizophrenia, such as delusions, mental turmoil and a sensation of distance from one's environment. Sometimes, speech is sparse and mangled. Other possible effects include anxiety, disorientation, fear, panic and paranoia, aggressive behavior and violence and an inability to feel physical pain. Long-term: You can experience memory loss, speech difficulties, depression, weight loss, the loss of fine motor skills, and mood disorders from long-term use of PCP. It's also been linked to comas and even death |

Methamphetamine Class: Stimulant AKA: crank, chalk, meth, croak, crypto, fire, glass, white cross, speed What is it? Methamphetamine is a synthetic stimulant. How do you take it: It is smoked, eaten, snorted or injected intravenously. Did you know? Methamphetamine got the nickname "crank" because bikers used to hide the drug in the crankcases of their motorcycles. Effects: Short-term: Because methamphetamine increases the body's adrenaline flow, it makes you feel euphoric, energetic, alert and strong. If it's eaten, it'll take about 15 minutes to kick in, but if injected, the rush is instantaneous. The high lasts around 12 hours. Taking meth increases the heart rate, respiration rate and blood pressure. You can also start talking faster and slurring your words. You may feel dizzy and be unable to sleep. High doses of methamphetamine can send you into convulsions. Long-term: Because you quickly build up a tolerance to meth, you'll need larger doses every time to get the same high. Over the long haul, you can get depressed, violent and paranoid. Many people binge on meth for days or even weeks at a time. The most dangerous stage of the binge cycle is called "tweaking." This means your body is going at full speed, without sleep, for long periods of time, which is damaging to the central nervous system and circulatory system. You may also experience weight loss and depression. In addition, methamphetamine can be highly addictive. Long-term and/or high dosages can bring on full-blown toxic psychosis (often exhibited as violent, aggressive behavior). Long-term damage to brain cells may also occur, like that caused by strokes or Alzheimer's disease. Also, if you inject meth and share needles, you risk contracting HIV or hepatitis. |

Ketamine Class: Depressant AKA: K , Special K, ket, Vitamin K, Kit Kat, keller, Kelly's Day, green, blind squid, cat valium, purple, super acid, C What is it? Ketamine is an anesthetic painkiller. How do you take it: Ketamine comes in both powder and liquid form. You snort the powder and swallow or inject the liquid. Did you know? Ketamine is primarily used by veterinarians to sedate animals. Effects: Short-term: Taking K makes you feel like your mind and body have been separated from one another, which is called a disassociation effect. Ketamine is a strong painkiller -- people taking it can get injured and not even realize it. You can become delirious, and eating or drinking before taking K can make you throw up. Possible toxic reactions can cause convulsions or heart failure. Long-term: You can experience hallucinations that include visual distortions and lost senses of time, sense and identity. People who take it can also suffer from delirium, impaired motor function, potentially fatal respiratory problems and vomiting. |

GHB Class: Depressant AKA: GBH, grievous bodily harm, scoop, liquid ecstacy What is it? GHB is the depressant gamma-hydroxybutyrate. How do you take it: It comes in a white powder that is often dissolved in a liquid. Did you know? GHB was originally developed as a sleep aid. Effects: Short-term: GHB lowers inhibitions and can make you feel relaxed, peaceful and euphoric. Taking GHB may cause nausea, a lack of coordination, difficulty breathing, seizures and unconsciousness. GHB has become infamous as one of the "date rape drugs" because it causes a sedate, drowsy feeling and a loss of inhibitions. Also, GHB mixed with alcohol can be deadly. Long-term: As the dose increases, that sedate feeling may eventually result in a coma or even death. |
