Census Records in San Benito Co., CA
1900 - went through every Roberts in San Joaquin and San Benito counties - no luck. Henry was only 19 so unless he was married or widowed, he will not be listed as head of household. Ancestry.com is slowly taking each census and listing every name, including wives and children. But they haven't gotten to the 1900/1910/1920 census yet. When you get the SS application back, that will tell you his father's name. Then you can locate the father on the 1900 census, providing he was alive then. Let me know what it is and I will try again.
*1910 - He is listed as Albert H. Roberts. He is living as a boarder with the J. Carlson family on Fifth street in Hollister, San Benito County, Ca. He is one of 38 boarders.
He states his age as 29 (that is correct), he was born in CA (that is correct), his father was born in England and his mother in Michigan. His occupation was House Carpenter.
1916 - married and had a son and a daughter (known fact)
1920 - Can't find him either as Albert H. or Henry A in CA or Washington.
*Based on your story, I would assume he married the first time about 1916 and under the name of Albert H. and probably in CA. He probably left her about 1921 (after the death of the child)
or 1922 and then changed his name prior to him marrying Elsie in 1923. (click)
1930 census: Henry gives misleading info about past:
Found them in the 1930 census in Dungeness, Clallam County, Washington
(E.D. district 5-8; Page 45, sheet 3A).
*Per the info on the census (taken on April 4, 1930):
Henry was born in 1880 in Colorado and so were both his parents.
(this was not true see 1910 information!)
Elsie was born in Colorado, her father in Ohio and her mother in
Missouri
Henry was married FOR THE FIRST TIME at age 42 (his age on this census
is 49) (a second marriage) His first marriage was about 1916 (2 children)
Elsie was married THE FIRST TIME at age 23 (her age on this census is
44) (her statements are true) Her first marriage was to George Uhrich (3 children)
Children are Roy Alfred age 6 and Etta May age 4 (true)
Henry owned his own home valued at $2500 and he owned a Service
Station. He was never in the Armed Forces.
