Literary Theory

Applying a literary theory is one way in which a text can be analyzed and interpreted. Every theory approaches a text from a different point of view, using different methods and concepts.

This site provides brief descriptions of the following literary theories in order to provide a basic idea of what literary theory/criticism is and how it can be used.

§        Biographical and historical criticism

§         Feminist criticism

§         New criticism

§         Psychological criticism

§        Reader-Response criticism

The key to using literary theory when analyzing a text is to focus on the main ideas of each theory.  Pay attention to the who, what, when, where, and why that the theory is focused on.

There are no right or wrong answers formed from interpretation as long as you are able to provide evidence to support your claims.
