12 hours after birth the doctors decided Tyler was working too hard to breathe so they decided to give him 2 doses of surfactant and ventilated him. After 65 hours he was put back on to CPAP. During this time he suffered a small brain heamorrhage and a hearing test revealed reduced hearing in the left ear. Both of these problems cleared up after a few months.
Ater a total of 96 hours on CPAP Tyler was placed in an isolette with head box oxygen. Finally at 2 weeks old we were able to have our first hold of him. He was so young but his wrinkled skin made him look like an old man. Our cuddle did not last long as he wasn't holding his oxygen levels too well so we had to put him back in the isolette. He was then given a transfusion of red blood cells to lift his oxygen levels up.
At 4 weeks old we got a phone call from the Logan Hospital saying that out baby had arrived. It shocked us both because we were told he wasn't ready to be transferred.
When we got to the Special Care Nursery at Logan, we instantly felt more relaxed then we did in the NICU. We were looking for a baby in an isolette but we couldn't see him. Then the nurse pointed us in the direction of an open cot and I just about fell to the floor. Tyler was in an open crib with sub nasal oxygen on. We were able to pick him up and hold him as much as we wanted.
Over the next 6 weeks he grew so fast and was slowly weaned off oxygen. At 10 weeks old he was finally allowed to come home with us. What a long road it had been to this point . But it had only just begun.......
