| WHATEVER HAPPENED TO EFFICIENCY? By Pete Perry When I was a young man, back in the fifties, you could rely upon friendly, courtious, personal service from shopkeepers and their assistants. The phrase then was 'The customer is always right'. Nowadays however, with the growth of multinationals and huge supermarkets, the customer (or 'client' as we are now known) has been relegated down the list of priorities in favour of profit and convenience of the staff. Even plant nurseries are becoming a thing of the past, taken over by Garden Centres, which are little more than supermarkets that sell a few plants (amongst other things!) The staff know precious little about the plants they are selling, because they are trained to sell as much as they can, in order to swell the vast profits of the garden Centre chain in exactly the same way as the supermarkets: indeed, the difference between them is getting more and more blurred at the edges! When trying to contact anyone from your telecommunications company, through your power suppliers to insurance companies, you are either charged at a premium rate for the privilege of giving them your business, or you are put on hold with some tinkly music, or, worst of all, you have to key in various numbers in order to get the service you want, and then you are left on hold with that stupid music until someone becomes available. Very often, they ask you to key in your account number or telephone number. This is merely a way of keeping you busy whilst you are on hold, because the first thing the operatorasks when you do finally get through is 'can I have your account number or your telephone number!' Many's the time I have thrown the handset across the room in frustration, and so has my partner, - and we are both very placid people! It makes you wonder if these companies have a deal with the phone manufacturers to keep up sales! Even when you think you have finished your business, you often discover (especially with insurance companies) that when you get the final paperwork in the post a few days later, extra charges have been added that you were not told of on the phone. Of course, the hope is that you will have been worn down so much by the hassle that you will simply roll over and accept the extra charge without question... SOME HOPE! |

| THE TRUTH ABOUT VIOLENCE AND VANDALISM Politicians are blaming the rise in violence and vandalism (particularly amongst young people) on poverty, lack of parental discipline and binge drinking, whilst at the same time doing nothing to tackle poverty, taking away powers of authority from parents, teachers and the police, and extending pub opening hours! Yes, of course these have something to do with the 'lack of respect' for authority and property in our society, - but it goes much deeper than that. From a very early age, our children are exposed to traffic fumes, which are known to cause brain damage. Witness children, (particularly in congested areas) playing 'kerbsy' by sitting on the kerb for hours |
| inhaling carbon monoxide, sulphur dioxide and nitrous oxides from the exhausts of road traffic. Witness too, young mums pushing their little darlings buggies across the road, behind cars that have these noxious fumes emitting from their exhaust pipes, whilst picking older kids up from school amid a sea of four-by-fours! Is it any wonder that the children lose a few brain cells and become violent and agressive? There again, - watch mothers feeding their children on fat-laden, additive-rich take-aways like MacDonalds and KFC, or ready-made meals that contain high fat, salt and additives, many of which are actually known to cause personality disorders and hyperactivity! Until we tackle these 'grass root' causes and outlaw junk food and petrol-driven vehicles,our Society will continue on a downward spiral... |

| WHATEVER HAPPENED TO PEOPLE POWER? There was a time, long long ago, when the voice of the people meant something: The Great British Public would demonstrate, and authority would at least listen. Nowadays however, more and more protests are being made illegal, and, even when the Public are invited to voice their opinion, whether it be on local development or Government policy, - Those authorities ignore even the largest petition and go ahead with whatever they planned in the first place, - riding roughshod over public opinion... isn't about time we changed all this? |
