Petra
Petra is an ancient city situated at some 250 Kilometres south-west Amman. It was the capital of the Arabian Nabataean Kingdom. The Roman Emperor Trajan occupied it in A.D. 106. Petra was a very rich city during the Nabataean period
.

It reached a very high level in civilization. The Nabataeans were famous in architecture and this is reflected by " El-Khazneh ", the Treasury. It is the most beautiful monument in Petra. When you reach this red-rose monument, carved in rocks at 11.00 a.m. and when the sun beam is direct on it, it looks like an illuminated pearl. To reach it, you can travel on horseback for one kilometer long fissure between overhanging cliffs of 100 metres height. It is called in Arabic the " Siq ". The travel through is very quiet and nothing is heard except the sound of the stones under the horse feet and the echo of the people’s steps. The sun beam cannot reach the bottom of the valley and sometimes it is dark during the day.

After " El-Khazneh " you see many remains left by the Nabataeans such as tombs, trade places, courts and temples, all carved in the rock. You also see the ancient paved street, then you can walk on monumental stairs carved in the rocks to climb to the top in order to see the Monastery carved in the rock. The Monastery is another breath taking monument, just like the Treasury. To read about Petra is not enough, but visit it in order to believe what you have read.
