The Pegasus Horse
Trial WILL RUN this year! JBE Enterprises has
decided to take on the organization of the event with the cooperation of
Jaime Buhler and the consent of the Buhler family. There will be some interesting
changes. Due to scheduling constraints, the event at Pegasus will run on
August 6-8. Entries fees will be staggered and commensurate with the level.
It will also feature a new level; the Elementary Test. This will be a 2'
division with all three phases included. We hope to encourage the particpation
of some of the newer riders which will afford them the experience of a full-fledged
USEA sanctioned event without the cost. JBE will also run a schooling event
at Pegasus in June; most likely the 19th. As soon as the date is finalized,
it will be posted on the WREA and JBEEvents websites. (posted 1/13/04)
Championships - Information From Area Chairman

David O'Connor Clinic is a BIG SUCCESS!!! Thanks to all who made this happen. Below is a note from the organizers.
Dear Clinic Participants, Supportive Family
Members and Eventing Enthusiasts,
A very warm and appreciative thank you to all those who eagerly participated
in the recent David O'Connor Clinic at Lynnleigh Farm and the Golden Spike
Event Center! Special thanks also to the incredible support team who helped
organize and arrange jumps, lunches, transport and enthusiasm~Mary Lou Hamill,
Susan Goodman, MaryAnn Miller, Kathryn and Lottie Rustad, Trisha Schmid,
Judy Swain, Randi Verrier and the rest of the LF Gang! Thanks so much to
Lucinda Wagner for helping out last minute during that scurry from Ogden
back to Lynnleigh Farm!
It was truly a wonderful educational experience topped off by smiles and
lots and lots of fun! It could not have happened without your involvement!
Post clinic comments included "I can die now!" "I think that
I've gone to heaven!" "I've never had anyone help me with my position
so much!" "What a difference in just one day! "Thank you
so much for this wonderful opportunity!" "He's the best that I've
ever ridden with!" "We are so fortunate to have someone of this
caliber! Not only is he a four star rider, but a gifted teacher!" Those
attending as riders, spectators and helpers, definitely felt that they had
good fortune shining upon them. However, many of us were surprised by the
lack of spectators, trainers and riders who missed out on a remarkable learning
opportunity by auditing at no charge. At most of the DOC Clinics around
the country, an audit fee is collected for the privilege of attending~as
much as $350 a week at his camps!
Monday and Tuesday sessions at Lynnleigh Farm were filled with assorted
disciplines and rider levels. There were private Dressage lessons; Hunter
and Jumper ponies/horses; Eventers fine tuning their skills for the next
day on Cross Country and a group of very excited ladies that included their
new horses, Dressage converts and return lay ups.
On Wednesday, KSL Television sent a team to cover the cross country clinic
session. Shelley Osterloh and her cameraman, Winston, spent hours watching,
taping and interviewing. What great exposure and safety promotion for our
sport! The segment aired on Thursday at 10 PM and early the next morning.
David remarked that it was one of the best media presentations he's seen!
It started with his win at Sydney; followed by footage of the clinic instruction;
interview/questions with David; comments by Susan Goodman, Golden Spike
Organizer and Clinic Participant, and finished up with a Shelley Osterloh
discussion while the clinic continued in the background. Several of the
riders were shown jumping down a hill and our beautiful mountains as a backdrop.
Even the uncooperative weather on Thursday did not dampen the spirits of
the participants. When the conditions on the cross country became too unsafe
and treacherous for the horses, we packed up and headed back to Lynnleigh
Farm and David created a challenging indoor school!
We are all enthusiastically waiting for his return post Athens!
Thanks again! Have a continued safe and fun season!
Appreciatively,
Robin Sundeen and Darcy Conklin

Utah's second Combined Training Event of the season was completed on 5/22/04. Many riders got much more than the bargained for at the Wasatch Pony Club's Chicken Event. Besides Event horses, there was a Boyscout Jamboree complete with a helicopter that took off and landed throughout the day blasting its sirens and a cannon that was fired on the hour. Yes, lots of horses did respond to this "added stimulus". It made for some very interesting rides and a fun day overall! Unlike the "Duck Event" of 2003, the 2004 event had great weather! If anyone has pictures to share from this event, please contact your webmaster. I'd love to post some of our members here. Wasatch PC will be posting results and pictures on their Web Site. Click here to check it out.
Utah Eventing Season - Opening Day was May 8th at Hawks Next Ranch, where the first combined training two-phase horse show was held. Click here to see some of the WREA members in their best poses (pictures courtesy of Kim Henneman).
Bob Hughes, of Carr-Hughes Productions and Executive Producer of the Rolex Kentucky Three-Day Event television broadcast, reported that the overnight ratings for Sundays NBC broadcast of the event were 1.4/3. According to Hughes, that translates to about 5 million people who watched at least some portion of the 90-minute broadcast. For a show of this type, of a non-mainstream sport, this is very good, very solid, he said Monday morning. NBC has already expressed interested to do the 2005 program. They were very happy with the show.
He went on to say that these numbers show a reasonable level of mainstream appeal for the sport of eventing, and that in comparison, eventing fared slightly better than past coverage of sports such as skiing and hockey (non-playoffs).
He also explained that positive feedback is very helpful when it comes to persuading the network execs who set the programming schedule. If youd like to send some kudos on to NBC, email them at sports@msnbc.com.

The WREA spring meeting was held on 4/28/04. If you were unable to attend, please be sure to review the meeting minutes. Many important topics were discussed including changes to year-end award requirements. Click here to see meeting minutes.
Another very important announcement was made at the meeting. WREA is sponsoring a LOGO Contest in pursuit of a hot new logo for the club! The lucky winner will receive his/her choice of a $100 tack gift certificate or $100 toward an Event entry in the 2004 event year, so get your creative juices flowing and send in your ideas!!! The contest is open to any and all current WREA members. Please submit your entries to Dee McCarthy (POB 680726 - Park City, UT 84068) by mail or email-dlmccarthy@earthlink.net. Entries are due by June 1st, with the winning logo being selected by the WREA executive committee. The winner will be announced at the June 19th Horse Trial at Pegasus.
This year's Rolex was yet another great experience! Although the weather was "damp", the horses and riders did a fabulous job to the thundering applause of another record crowd! Many of our Area eventers made the journey to Lexington and were eagerly spectating. A high spot for me during this visit was the Course Walk conducted by Rolex rider, Holly Hepp. It was thrilling and enlightening to go to each jump and hear the technical considerations each horse and rider team had to master. Others in our contingent demonstrated that they are serious contenders for the Shopping Olympics by burning up the trade fair and lining their suitcases with new tack. A great time was had by all at this jewel in the Triple Crown of Eventing (and shopping) ! Kim Severson and Winsome Adante demonstrated for the second time exactly how to win. Amy and Liz offered a serious challenge in the shopping department :)

WREA General Membership meeting of 7/28/04
A Wonderful BBQ was provided by Sally and Kevin Shannon at their home in Park City. If you missed this, you missed a great evening !!! Below is the meeting summary provided by Sally Shannon...
Presiding manager, Bonnie East conducted the
meeting and led discussions
concerning:
ADULT CAMP: Ellen Guthrie reported this was a huge success both with the participants and the instructors - who ALL want to repeat the experience next year. No injuries were sustained this year. New venues including Heron Park and Moonrock are being considered for the future.
REBECCA FARMS: Ingrid George reported that the event was well organised with only a small scheduling issue. The course in fabulous condition and an impressive 363 competitors. Our local WREA representatives all did well in competition. Members expressed a desired to pass on their CONGRATULATIONS to all those who competed. Dee asked for those results to be emailed to her.
PEGASUS: Bonnie East reported that the course is looking wonderful and green following the rain this month, that the footing is good and that all approaches and landings have been mowed and weed whacked. Bonnie asked that participants thank Julie who has put in a great deal of volunteer time. The stadium arena has been newly sowed and mowed. She spoke highly of Jaime who she said has been a pleasure to work with. New jumps have been added and old ones restained. Bonnie asked for volunteer help this saturday and sunday with more weed whacking, painting and manure removal.
JUMP JUDGES: Bonnie East said she needed 3 more for Pegasus on Saturday. Dee told members that she, Rebecca Conklin and Sally Shannon were organising jump judges for Golden Spike. Orientation for jump judge volunteers was discussed with the hope of hosting instruction pre event because volunteers have to be there so early.
CINDY BURGE: Ellen Guthrie described the tragic events leading to the accident at Rebecca Farms that caused the eventer's death. All members were shocked and saddened. Bonnie East will be sending a letter/card of condolence to the Burge family.
GOLDEN SPIKE: Carol Klar agreed to post a notice on the website announcing the need for volunteers this weekend at Ogden to help Dale Woolsey with jump preparation.
Dear 2004 Golden Spike Competitors:
The organizers of Golden Spike Horse Trials would like you to know that we recognize the problems which were so evident with the slippery footing in Stadium at the event held September 11-12. We, too, were unhappy with the mud, which stubbornly refused to completely dry out by our 1:00 PM start. We had not at all planned for the course to be soaked down so thoroughly by the well-meaning grounds crew of Weber County Fairgrounds.
Apparently, we had the misfortune of having an inexperienced man to run the water truck, who was instructed without our knowledge by another of the crew to water, and he did, in a big way. However, the buck will stop with the organizer.
We just want to let you know that the footing issues are being seriously looked at, and that the location of the Stadium Course may well be moved, perhaps immediately north of the first fence on the Cross Country Course. Our long-time designer will consider this in consultation with our Cross Country Course Designer.
Meanwhile you may rest assured that we will simply not water the course the night before, as we are now holding the event in a cooler part of the year than previously, and it just may not dry out in time to be good.
Ann George, Organizer

From your Webmaster - Winter Health Tips / Shopping Tips!
With the COLD weather now here, two things come to mind for keeping your equines healthy. First is an adequate supply of unfrozen water. As temps dip well below freezing, keeping water in a liquid state may be a challenge! I took the plunge this year and had heated "auto-waterers" installed. This has made my horse chores a breeze, since I no longer have to struggle with frozen water troughs or frozen buckets. There are a few different types of auto-waterers available. The most widely advertised is the Nelson product. After surveying a few friends and talking to the farm-supply salesman at Steve Regan, I decided to purchase the Hoskins product. The design of this product seems to be pretty safe since the heat source is completely separate from the water. Safety was a big concern since I had heard horror stories of horses being electrocuted on such devices. I had mine professionally installed, and they have worked flawlessly throughout this recent cold snap. Horses do drink better in winter when the chill is off the water. Hydration is a good aid in the preventation of impaction colics too. Auto-waterers may seem expensive or extravagent, but the cost of one unit, professionally installed is only about 1/4 that of a colic surgery!
The next Winter Tip is about deworming. In this climate, horses should be dewormed quarterly. Since our desert climate is a little less hospitable to parasites, we get a bit more leeway than folks in wet climates that need to deworm every 8 weeks. In climates that have WINTER (yes, that's us!), it is widely recommended that horses be dewormed with a product that kills bots, shortly after the first hard frost. Bots are the worms that attach themselves to the lining of your horse's stomach (lovely thought, isn't it?). Of the many products on the market today, only two classes of dewormers will do this: Ivermectin and Moxidectin. These drugs are packaged with many different labels, but when all is said and done, the active ingredients are what matters. The cost of dewormers has decreased a lot in the past year. The best deal I have found recently is at Big D's (1-800-321-2142). They have Ivermectin at $4.49/tube and do not charge shipping on orders over $50. For those of you with lots of horses, the 3-dose tube is even less per horse. They also have special pricing on Rotation II at $3.99/tube(active ingredient is Pyrantal Pamoate, the drug in Strongid). Pyrantal Pamoate does not kill Bots, but it is a very good, safe general dewormer, and would be a good "next treatment" drug after using the Ivermectin. Typically, I rotate between these two drugs. It is an effective and inexpensive way to keep parasites under control.
Like all businesses, veterinary pharmaceutical research moves ahead just like human medicine. We'll hope for the sake of our animals, that we don't label Vioxx or Viagra for equine use. A product that may have recently caught your attention is the new dewormer drug, Praziquantel; this drug is used against tapeworms. It has been widely used in small animals for years, and was recently approved for use in horses. While I was in college, many years ago, we were taught that tapeworms are not terribly pathogenic, unless the animal was otherwise debilitated. The more recent advertising would suggest otherwise. Is this hype to get you to buy the product or a legitimate worry? If your horse is a hard keeper and/or you are concerned about tapeworms, you might want to run the question by your equine vet. Over-the-counter Praziquantel is formulated in combination with other deworming products. Although I don't believe that any of my horses are troubled by tape worms, I did try the Farnam "Combo Care" product recently which contains Moxidectin and Praziquantel. It is very easy to dose since it is a gel and they can't spit it out! Big D's has this presently for $9.99/tube. There are other products that combine Ivermectin with Praziquantel, which will provide good, broad-spectrum deworming as well, although I haven't seen any for less-than $9.99 with free shipping.
Happy Shopping and a healthy holiday season to all of my 2 and 4-legged friends!
Any questions? Feel free to email me. cklar@comcast.net ............................................
Dear Members and Friends,
Another great season of eventing is coming to an end and hopefully, it was rewarding in some way to each of you. Whether you had success in placings or learned new and exciting things about the sport, your horse and yourself, I hope you look back on the 2004 season with fond memories.
There were many more local opportunities than in previous years to compete and earn points in addition to the already busy Area IX schedule. It seemed as though there were many new faces which is encouraging for the future of our sport and although we are losing local venues, we seem to be gaining enthusiasm for the sport.
As you settle in for the winter, your executive board of very talented individuals is gearing up for the Awards Banquet which will be held January 29, 2005 at the Homestead. As we did last year, the club will be subsidizing a portion of the price of the ticket to make it affordable for as many as possible to attend. We had a great turnout last year, and hope to improve on it this year.
The banquet is a great time to recognize the accomplishments of our fellow members and it is also the primary fundraiser for the club. We appreciate the support of members through sponsorships, donations to the Silent Auction, as well as attending the banquet. If you would like to be an award sponsor and/or would like to donate something to the Silent Auction, please contact one of the executive committee. We will be sending out letters soon to potential sponsors and look for your invitation in early January.
We'll see you then!
Bonnie
