NEWS

A wonderful clinic was given recently by Eric Smiley - Please click here for the clinic summary contributed by Erin Hofmann! If anyone has pictures from this clinic that they would like to share, email them to cklar@att.net and I'll post them here!

Sincere sympathy goes out to Lisa-Michelle Benson who lost her wonderful horse "Cat" to irreparable colic on Thursday, March 6, 2003. The vet tried his best to save him, but there was too much internal damage. It came on suddenly and without warning. In just a few short hours he was gone.

Lisa-Michelle was delighted to own Cat from the time she rescued him at three years old until his death at the young age of eleven. He was a lovely chestnut horse with a wonderful gallop and big jump. Lisa-Michelle and Cat were quite a pair. He was a strong athlete but he always took good care of her. She will miss him more than words can say. Lisa-Michelle would like to express her thanks to all of you who have had a kind word for her in this difficult time.

Bonnie East is putting together a special remembrance item for Lisa-Michelle. If you are interested in contributing to this, please call Bonnie at 573-9815.

Quarter 2 - 2003

Words of "wisdom" from our President, Trisha 4/3/03

Check out the calendar below on our website! There are two schooling horse trials, a two phase, a dressage schooling show and clinics - all within a short driving distance from Salt Lake City and all within the next two months! Seems like Utah is a pretty great state for eventing.

WREA is now also in a pretty great state. Thanks to the efforts of Lorna Burgess and her law firm, Parsons, Behle & Latimer, contributions to WREA are now tax deductible to the extent permitted by law. The federal government and the state of Utah now recognize WREA as a tax-exempt educational organization under 501(c)(3) of the IRS code. WREA's new status should help fundraising efforts.

Arizona recently proved to be a pretty great state for WREA members too. Several members competed at Trojan, and made many of us envious. Some of you jumped the REALLY big jumps - you know who you are - so congratulations!

For the rest of us who haven't yet taken that big road trip to show or to school, now is a good time to have the trailer inspected, and to make sure that the truck is ready to pull our valuable equine partners.

Additionally, if you are going to start showing, it is time to review the recent USEA rule changes (there's a summary on our website), to make sure that your national and local memberships are up to date, to ensure that your brand inspection is current (and can be found) and to get your horse's necessary health tests, like a Coggins test, performed in advance of your first competition's opening date.

And it is also time for some of us to practice backing up the trailer!

Rolex 2003 - It was anotherr spectacular year at the KY Horse Park! The competitors were awesome and seemed to thrive on the XC course that was designed to run in the opposite direction this year. The addition of several jumbo-trons around the XC course made viewing of most of the course possible from one comfortable location! The weather cooperated quite nicely and only dampened a few of the Friday dressage rides. Unlike 2002, the XC day was perfect, and I'm happy to say there were no major wrecks. We were all happy to see Bruce Davidson's excellent XC ride, and marveled at his incredible recovery from numerous broken bones sustained during an event in MA late last summer. At 53, he is still an amazing athlete! The British contingent kicked our butts, taking the top 3 awards this year. Buck Davidson was the highest placing US rider, finishing in 4th place. Another young up-and-coming eventer, 21-year old Will Faudree finished an impressive 12th. For all the official results, click here. The first of the XC photos are now online. Click here for a look!

Foal Watch - Its always fun to see the new babies frolicking about in the spring time! Please submit any foal pictures you'd like to share with your fellow WREA members! Please include your name, as well as the foal's sire and dam. Click here to see foals submitted to date.

July/August - In this issue of Hunter & Sport Horse is an excellent article on "The Future of Eventing" mainly the CCI to CIC format change that is to take place in 2008, and the impact that will have on the sport. If you have a copy of this magazine, see pg. 14 for details. In a nutshell, this says that the endurance phase is going to lose the roads and tracks and steeplechase at the Olympic level, mainly as a cost-cutting measure. The article further speculates that with less endurance required, the predominance of TBs in the sport may be replaced by WBs in the future.

Notes from the fall Eric Smiley Clinic - Once again, it sounds like he was loved by all!

Our condolences to Angie Binkerd on the loss of her horse, DB. He was a wonderful 21 year old TB gelding that had been a successful eventer, most recently winning 2nd in Jr. Training Level at the 2003 Golden Spike Horse Trial. DB died quickly and unexpectedly on Friday, 11/28 of an apparent aneurysm. DB was a real gentleman who will be missed by all who knew him.

...US Eventing - Format Update!...

BADMINTON STICKS TO WINNING FORMULA

The Mitsubishi Motors Badminton Horse Trials in 2004 will retain its traditional format. The recent International Equestrian Federation decision
to remove the steeplechase phase from cross country day at its Championships has caused much controversy in the sport, with many people asking whether other events would retain it.

Event Director Hugh Thomas commented "Our event next year is an important qualifier for the Olympic Games. It is also the most sought after prize in the sport of Eventing and with its emphasis on the traditional values it represents the pinnacle of achievement for any horse or rider."

Thomas consulted British Team Manager Yogi Breisner and British Eventing, the national governing body, as well as the other major event organisers before announcing the Badminton decision. He also said that as had often been done before in an Olympic year, both the steeplechase and the cross country courses would be a little shorter than usual, to give the horses the very best chance in Athens at the Olympic Games.

There is also the opportunity for a rider in 2004 to emulate Pippa Funnell's Rolex Grand Slam success, by winning at Lexington (USA), Badminton and Burghley, with all 3 of the sport's 'majors' having now confirmed their continuation as 'long-format' competitions. Perhaps Pippa could even win
the Grand Slam again?!

WREA Report read at the MSEA annual meeting

>>> From WREA President, Patricia Schmid 10/23/03 07:26PM >>>

This has been a challenging and exciting year for the Wasatch Range Eventing Association (WREA).

We lost, and gained events. The WREA decided not to run the Pegasus event. We saw a dormant event site, Zephyr Ranch, host two schooling events. The events put on at Golden Spike by the Wasatch Pony Club were great successes. The wet weather for their Chicken Event in May was tough though - did anyone else hear rumors of trout on the cross country course? Bonnie East continued to host her popular two-phase events, giving people numerous opportunities to show off their dressage and stadium skills.

Lots of riders from the WREA attended the popular Adult and Young Rider camps. I am proud to boast that WREA's Ellen Guthrie, along with Ashley Colonel, organized those fantastic camps. Swiftsure Ranch was a great setting, with an amazing assortment of cross country jumps. The corner was especially impressive as I looked up at it. Twice. The instructors were marvelous. We are all looking forward to camp next year as Ellen and Ashley gamely volunteered to do it again.

WREA achieved non-profit status with the help of Lorna Burgess and her law firm, Parsons, Behle & Latimer. Donations to WREA are now tax deductible!

An outstanding year end awards banquet was held at the Homestead Resort in Midway, with generous help from the Shannon family.

The WREA moved into cyberspace with a great website. Carol Klar, our newsletter editor/webmaster, keeps us informed of events and results,
and provides a great communication resource for our members. Here's
our website: http://www.oocities.org/wreautah/

Once again, our trainers, vets, and farriers ( in some cases helped by our doctors) helped us improve our performance, or heal from our
mistakes. Our horses helped us maintain what sanity we have left. Our
friends helped us improve our perspective and maintain a sense of humor.

Thanks to all for a great year, with a special thanks to Bonnie East, vice president; Dee McCarthy, secretary/treasurer (who voluntered to take on both jobs - what a woman!) ; Ellen Guthrie, delegate; and Carol Klar, newsletter/webmaster.

Last week there was a house fire in Sandy that burned a three-plex (it has been on the news and in the paper). One of the guys who cleans stalls at Corner Canyon lived there with his wife and 1yr old son. Saul and his family are in need of donations of winter clothes, food, and money. Saul wears mens 34/32 pants, shoes 9, shirts L. Maria wears pants 9, shirts M/L, shoes 8.5. The baby is 14months, and fairly chunky.
His son was born with a serious medical condition and Saul is working four jobs to help pay his medical bills.
