Silent Sentinels Writers' Corner ~ Silent Sentinels

Silent Sentinels

Sided by flags, the crosses stood,
As a regiment on parade.
Slatted symbols of white stained wood,
Counting the cost warriors paid.

Grim reminder to loved ones left,
Of the belligerence of man,
Leaving whole families bereft,
For the sake of some martial plan.

Here they stand on a foreign shore,
These crossed pieces of old lumber,
Cautioning us to war no more,
While beneath, lost loved ones slumber.

Through passing years, what have we learned,
About the failings of mankind?
What victory have vanquished earned,
If peace those who follow can’t find?
