Day 17: Chateau St Michelle Winery, Music Museum, Bumbershoot
We left Mukeltio at 9:00 as we would drive toward St Micheal Winery today near Redmond Wa. We also wanted to drive past the Micorsoft Headquarters. Since we can't visit Bill Gate's house on Lake Washingotn, at least we could say we drove by where the the richest person in the world works. First on to St Michael Winery though as they have a large winery that also has a picnic site and have concerts during the summer. We have been here many times and usually try to come here on a Friday afternnon in the the summer. Right across the street is Columbia Crest which is also a good place to sample wine. Not as well known prices are resonable and wine is not bad as we bought some their Johanisberg Reisling
Have
been looking forward to today since the beginnning of the trip as we would
go to Bumbershoot Festival and Music Museum in Seattle. In my biased personal
opinion, this is the best four day music festival in North America. I
have been to festivales in Oregon (July 4th in Portland)and California
(Monterey Blues) and nothing matches the variey of Bumbershoot. This year
there would be close to 100 bands a day singing all kinds of music. In
the last couple days they have had Tracy Chapman, George Clinton were
here yesterday and in the next couple days there well be Elvin Bihop,
Joan Osborne, Ben Harper and Joan Jett. There will also be daily weddings
occuring on sight. Price is 12.50 per day of $40 for the four day weekend.
I paid for my ticket and started walking around
the mass crowd of people. It's 70 degrees and everybody is in there short
sleeve and shorts. As much as I like music, I have to admit that the best
part of Bumbershoot is people watching. Young 'grunge' teeneager, elderly
couples, families, young couples, girl watching, and kids playing in the
water fountain. I notice that there is a crowd near one stage where the
Robbie Fulks band is playing Hillbily rock music. His lyrice are entertaining
and this was a great showman singing and playing quitar. I heard him play
'Roots rock wiredos" and had to buy the CD.
I went up to the Space Needle to get a couple pictures of Seattle on
the sunny weather day. I was able to take a picture of the fans sitting
on the grass listening to blues music near one of the stages. The view
from 'the needle' also shows the Olympic Mountains, downtown Seatle,
Gren lake to the north and and Puget Sound inlet. we have ate here a
couple time and the food is ok but rather expensive even if it does
hav a rotating floor with a 360 view. It's a good place to vist it the
weather is nice for the view. The Space Needle was built for the 1962
world's fair and is still a populare place to go on a nice day or to
take pictures of a nice sunset.
After coming down from the space need I went to the comedy Statge where
Nick Swardsen put on a good 20 minut act. I also went to the bookclub
and bought a couple book form a auther I have met bofore. There is also
a stage for poetry, kids stage, circus acts, opera house, art exhibits
and so much more.Don't miss it if you come to Seattle during the summer.
In one art exibith there was a wall size drawing reflecting the vivid
memories of 'WTO Protests'. It was painted by five individuals who did
an outstanding job exrpessing what that week was like in the Pacific
Northwest.
It's now about 6:00 and I decided to take the monorail to the Westlake shopping mall to get something to eat. They have every kind of culteral food here that you can think of. I usually get some middle east food for $7 that will fiill me up for the rest of tehnight. Westlake Mall has a large variety of small shops. It is is always a good place to visit for a couple hours while in Seattle. I walk out of the mall and walk up the street to new Pacific shoping mall. This has been built in the last couple years as it has shops on the first two floors with restaurent and a movie theatre on the top floors. Other shops of interest in the downtown area include, Nordstroms's, Planet Hollywood, Nike, and much more. A good place to spend a day shopping and enjoying a downtown city.
I took the monorail back to Bumbershoot later that evening and wanted to see Elvin Bishop before I left. I like his songs Fishin and 'Fooled Around and Fell in Love'and his country blues type of music. I would drive home and stay at the house tonight. There are some new hotels that have been built downtown in Seattle in the last couple years. I would recommnd though going south and staying at hotels in either Kent or Auburn. You will find cheaper prices There are also many hotels close to Southcenter near Tukwilia that are a little more expensive but a good centreal location and only ten miles away from Seattle via I-5.
150 miles today and
