I have collected some equipment that I use frequently when I get the chance to observe the sky. This is what I use and why.

EquipmentWhy do I use this?
60mm (2.4 inch) refractorThis is a lightweight, portable telescope that doesn't cost a lot. I don't agree with many people when it comes to 60mm. I don't think that they are useless, in fact I think that every observer that wants to seriously pick up the hobby should have one.
200mm (8 inch) reflectorI haven't had this one for very long. It has the ability to split harder double stars and makes things clearer than the 60mm. It has the ability to show the planets in much more detail than the 60mm. I also picked the one on an equatorial mount so if I an ever try astrophotography, I have the mount needed.
Eyepieces 1.25" 25mm
1.25" 9mm

National Audubon SocietyŽ Field Guide to the Night SkyIf you don't have this book, you should go out and get it, either at the store or your library. This book has all the observing charts you'll ever need when you start. It also has plenty of information so that you can learn about the stars and constellations without being outside observing.
SkyAtlas 2000.0 Second Edition
Wil Tirion, Roger W. Sinnott
I rely on this atlas often. It has the most detailed charts that I have seen, and stars are listed to magnitude 8, a must if you own a medium telescope. I wouldn't have been able to find some of the objects that I have found without this atlas, such as M57.
