The Destruction Of Mankind
Ra was angry with mankind,  and  its disrespectful and "evil" ways to the Netjer (Gods).  Ra tore his right eye out and threw it upon the ground.  Sekhmet/Het-Hert sprang up and did as Ra bid, the destruction of mankind.

Sekhmet/Het-Hert was so good at destroying mankind, Ra feared there would be no one left.  He then brewed 7,000 jars of red beer mixed with mandrake or pomegranate (some stories say red ochre was used) to fool Sekhmet/Het-Hert that the beer was the blood of the slain.

She became intoxicated (  think of as a form of derailing one's rage) and forgot about her bloodthirst.  She turned back to Het-Hert.  **She also became a healer and a protector from that day on.
The Distant Goddess
Het-Hert became angry with her father, Ra, and wandered away from Egypt.  Great sadness fell over the land and Ra, having lost his eye, decided she needed to come back.  Het-Hert had become a lioness (believed to be in Nubia) and she destroyed all that approached her.

Tehuti (Thoth) agreed to lure her back and disguised himself as a baboon.  He tells her stories and makes her homesick for Egypt.  So she agrees to return.

As she comes home, she bathes in the Nile and becomes her gentle nature, but not before the Nile turns red from the effort of cooling her rage.
The Wandering Eye
Atum created his children Shu and Tefnut to alleviate his solitude.  But Shu and Tefnut wandered away and left Atum alone again.

Atum was determined to find his offspring, so he removed one of his eyes and filled it with his own power.  He called the Eye his daughter, and it manifested as Het-Hert/Sekhmet.

Atum commanded Het-Hert/Sekhmet to scour the universe for signs of Shu and Tefnut.  She did find Shu and Tefnut, eventually, and returned them to their father, who wept for joy.  The tears fell to earth and became the first human beings.

Atum placed the Eye on his forehead, in the form of the cobra.  In this position, HetHert/Sekhmet would be feared forever by Gods and men alike.
Final Note on the Uraeus
The uraeus or cobra center to the solar disk on Sekhmet's headdress and that of other solar deities represents the destructive "Eye of Ra"  and as a representative of Udjit.

This can be represented as a  solar deity, which sits uon the head of the members of the royal family (Pharoah in particular).

The Udjit eye is known as "the Whole Eye" and means literally the eye as a bodily organ and agent of the Netjer's activity.

**Quick Note: Sekhmet is an example of being balanced.  She is both a healer and a destroyer.
