SRSP: Student Refugee Sponsorship Program
In general
WUSC has created a program that privately sponsors refugee students to come to Canada to pursue secondary education. In doing so, WUSC has been working towards achieving its objective of "promoting human development and global understanding through education and training". By assisting people whose education has been interrupted by war and/or persecution, WUSC's sponsorship program also contributes to a greater understanding among students and faculty and staff on Canadian campuses to the situation of refugees throughout the world.
At UVic
The UVic local committee is looking for volunteers who have the enthusiasm and energy it takes to prepare for and support a student throughtout the sponsorship year. Refugee students need your support and friendship to settle into a new country with different customs.

To assist the students, who are not accustomed to Canadian budgets or currency, we prepare a yearly budget and explain costs to the student as they arise. The first year all expenses are covered and some financial support is offered for the following year. We hope to assist the student in understanding aspects of Canadian economy. We provide some assistance in the second year to ease the transition from sponsorship and self-sufficiency.

Beginning in September of 2003 the University offers our refugee students a $5000 tuition scholarship. We alsoreceive from UVSS referendum to cover other costs such as housing, books, transportation, etc.

We had one student for the 2001-02 school year.
