Who is tired of payin' an arm and a leg to go fast???? I am. So I have taken my years of experience in building engines to the web. |
I have been building engines(mostly sbc) for a long time now on little or no money and have aquired alot of knowledge on how to do it on the cheap(er) side. |
In this page I would like to share my thoughts and ideas with you and hopefully learn something from you. Please bear with me as this page is constantly being added to. I am currently in the process of building a 468 chevy which I aquired for a measly $400.00. Wow! what a steal!!! The thing already made about 525 hp but sitting in the garage at a friends for 10 years, just wasnt going to cut it. So I tore it down with hopes to put it back with 600 hp ready to go. The 060 block (74) bears a stock forged crank .010 on the mains and std. on the rods. The stock rods hold on to trw slugs (trw2399 slight dome race piston) with fed/mog rings. I totally de-burred the entire block of any casting flash because of the stress factor, installed debris screens in the lifter valley(made from a metal speaker grill) and some 2-part epoxy. The main difference in the motor now and then is.....ROLLER! the only way to get that many horses (reliably) is to go roller. |
Although the engine was not originally equipped with roller, it soon will be. For the best price vs. quality I chose doug herbert for the roller cam & roller lifters. At $200.00 ea. I can't complain. Next on the engine comes the heads which are vintage oval ports that were chosen by the original owner as they are the best o.e. cast iron head availible. Some simple bowl clean-up and some port polishing should really wake these babies up! Fitted with 2.19 int. & 1.88 ex. stainless steel valves, these heads are ready to rock. Although the 468 came with an Edelbrock torker 2 intake, that will not do. I plan to use a victor instead as it has the nitrous bosses for a fogger system (hehe) if the need arises. It also fits better in the rpm range that this engine will see quite often. Next is the carb which is a 850 Holley also included in the purchase price. No, its not used, its brand new! Gotta love that price! |
