My name is Bill L. I'm an alcoholic. My sobriety date is May 20th 1984. That is when my life began. Before then, living was just an act of endurance. A series of events marked only by the collection of empty bottles and cans.
What follows is the very abbreviated version of my story. There are those that you will find as they share their stories who will tell all. That is not the purpose of telling our stories. The purpose of telling our stories is to share that we have found a way to live life on life’s terms, daily…without a drink.
We need to find out why we drank in order to deal with it and let go of the past. Living in the past is like trying to run a triathlon with a boat anchor around your neck. It is heavy and makes us tired, keeps getting in the way, and keeps puling us under as we try to swim through the choppy waters of life. Until we cut it loose, the past dictates how fast we move toward sobriety.
My story is not unique among other sober alcoholics. Many have said that they have seen themselves in my words. My intention is to allow you to see how we are very much alike. I share not out of a need to feed my ego, but to bring those that still suffer closer to the hope and peace I have found.
As is our custom in recovery; when we share our stories, we share what it was like when we drank, what happened to motivate us toward sobriety, and what it is like now living sober.
So, I invite you to come and share with us as we trudge the road of Happy Destiny.
