Do you? Have problem with your drinking, I mean?  If you have ever wondered; or if you think that you might, you probably do.

As the saying goes: “If you walk like a duck, quack like a duck, eat duck food, and hang around with ducks, chances are that you are probably a duck.

This is a decision that only you can make.  No one can make it for you.

What follows is a few simple questions that will help you decide for yourself.

1 Do you drink heavily after a quarrel, setback, or disappointment?
2 Do you drink to handle pressure or to “unwind”?
3 Do you find that you can handle more alcohol now, than when you first started to drink?
4 Have you ever had a “blackout” when you drank?
5 Have you ever found yourself sneaking drinks to hide from friends and family?
6 Do you ever get in a hurry to get a drink?
7 Are you uncomfortable in social situations when there is nothing alcoholic to drink?
8 Have you ever felt guilty because of your drinking?
9 Have you ever been angry with family or friends when you found out that they have discussed your drinking behind closed doors?
10 Has the frequency of your alcohol related blackouts increased?
11 Do you want to continue drinking at a social function after your friends have stopped?
12 Do you need to have or invent reasons to drink?
13 Do you regret what you did the night before while you were drinking?
14 Have you tried various methods to stop drinking?
15 Have you ever failed to keep your promises to quit?
16 Have you tried to control your drinking by moving or changing jobs?
17 Do you avoid family and friends when you are drinking?
18 Do you have financial problems because you drink?
19 Do you think that people treat you unfairly because of your drinking?
20 Do you find yourself eating less?
21 Do you get “the shakes” until you have your first drink of the day?
22 Do you find that you can’t drink as much now as you did when you first started drinking?
23 Have you ever been drunk several days in a row?
24 Are you depressed?
25 Have you ever seen things that were not really there?
26 Do you have fear when you drink heavily?

If you answered yes to 1 to 8 of these questions, you might have a problem with your drinking and you could be in the early stages of alcoholism. Talk to somebody about your drinking.

If you answered yes to 9 to 21 questions, you have a problem and are in the mid stages of alcoholism.  Seek help to stop drinking.

If you answered yes to 22 to 26 questions, you are in danger!  You are in the final stages of the disease of alcoholism.  If you do not stop now you will die!  Seek help now!

You ask, “Where do I begin?”

You are as close as the phone to any and all kinds of help.  Many Alcoholics Anonymous facilities are listed in both the white and yellow pages of the phone book.  Many Clergy have contacts to sober people.  Call the police. Go to the emergency room. Or simply ask a friend for help.

If you do nothing, the outcome is clear. Oblivion.  But if you choose to do something, then you will be rewarded by a life full of meaning and peace of mind.

     The choice is yours.
