Steelhead MMount system
Back to Home Index
I wasn't the bright one to come up with this set up, but  a slight deviation of the originator David Moore Set up
Rock solid, protected from tailgaters,
Yakima Steelhead's ( or any set of trays can be used ) and a set of
horizontal  mightymounts.
This is the way I do it, but it's not an approved method.

Pick you favorite fork mounted trays and one set of horizontal mightymounts, and you are on you way to a factory looking
set-up.  Anklebiters or Lockjaws ( any mount that leaves your front wheel on ) makes it difficult to get the bikes up.
Since its hard to see the hook-up when its all installed, here are the trays without the crossbar.
Once the trays are on, a shortened Yak roundbar helps stabilize everything.  One note, have the trays the furthest out you can,
but inward just enough that the side rails don't interfer when locking down the skewers.
Still leaves you with some room between the trays... if you need more, consider apehanders..
Anyone with disc brakes, please see link at bottom
From my understanding, Yak Steelheads will no longer exist soon, to be replaced by a version of Yak Vipers.  If your bike has disc brakes, the forks  might not fit into the skewers.  I had to modify my tray slightly to get my new ride to fit....
Click here for the added mod to the tray, I believe this will be neccessary for other trays as well
Installation:
Require
2 Steelhead trays, 1 yak. crossbar 48" (to be shortened later), 2 longer bolts, (match the ones supplied by yakima )
4 matching  nuts & washers, 4 mightmounts  about 20 minutes for first time install

Remove the nuts from the horizontal mmounts ( knock them out with a screwdriver)
Install Mmounts on crossbars,  install long bolts into the channels of the steelhead's and lower into the Mmounts.
Add the wahers and nuts, do not tighten  ( I prefer the nuts with nylon inserts so they don't back out )
Set the position of the trays.. making sure the locking arm of the skewer has clearance from the crossbar and the siderail.
Install yak crossbar into the steelheads.. this will add stability when carriying bikes, and will also square up the rack position.
Tighten up the nuts once everything is set and positioned.
Mount bikes, a quick test it grabbing the bike by the fork and pulling on it, watch for any movement.  I can literally rock the X from side to side.

Special Note: double check the bolts that hold the stock crossbar clamps the the side rails ( plastic end pieces ) as well as where the stock rack goes into the roof.

This is not an approved method, but I have used it for the past 3 seasons..
Standard waivers apply if you choose to follow.
