When she woke she was alone and she was able to sit and think about her situation. At first she was only angry and sat there cursing everyone and everything she could think of to blame for it. But then she looked out the window and there sat a fire lizard on the branch of a tree, obviously chirping loudly. Her brow furrowed and she thought of how that fire lizard used to wake her up in the morning and how angry it would make her. The sadness came then and she soon found herself huddled in a ball on her bed sobbing, tears coursing down her cheeks.

The egg began shaking violently and her mother produced a bowl of meat scraps just as a tiny golden head managed to poke through the shell.

Oirana exclaimed in delight and quickly fed the little queen as much of the meat as it wanted. Very soon the tiny hatchlings hunger was sated and she fell asleep in the crook of Oirana’s arm, her belly distended from all the meat she’d consumed.
