Oirana
The sheer magnitude of what it meant to be deaf had not settled on her until that moment and the agony of never hearing birds sing, or dragons bugle, or even a fire lizard’s chirp was too much for her. Her mind fled the thoughts running through her head and she found solace in sleep. When she woke again her mother was sitting beside her bed with a worried smile on her face. Oirana tried to smile back but was unequal to the task and so she just looked at her mother questioningly. Her mother unfortunately had never learned to write and as there was no one else in the room, Oirana was forced to try to read her mother’s lips as she spoke to her. Oirana shook her head time and time again but her mother just kept on talking until finally she reached down beside her and handed Oirana a small round package. She looked questioningly at it for a moment before she felt it shudder and quickly unwrapped it to find a fire lizard egg wrapped in warm sand. The egg began shaking violently and her mother produced a bowl of meat scraps just as a tiny golden head managed to poke through the shell. ![]() Continue... |
