Sabriana, Rodilon, and Sarine

Sarine giggled from her hiding place, putting her hand over her mouth to stifle the noise. Her sister heard it anyway though and self-consciously stepped back from the man before her. Sabriana cast her gaze about the room, her brow furrowed, as she saw no one present. But she knew her sister was hiding, Sarine could tell. Her manner towards the young man before her became stiff and uncomfortable, where before it had been warm and inviting. He frowned and looked about, seeing no one he took a step towards her, which Sabriana negated by taking another step back. Finally he took her meaning and left, and Sabriana scowled as she peered into the plantings to one side of this large room.

“Sarine, you horrid little spy,” she began, her scowl fierce, “get out here. I’ll take you to Mama this time so help me, I will!”

Sarine giggled happily again and danced out of her hiding place. Sabriana lunged at her but she danced lightly out of her sister’s grasp.

“You’ll do no such thing, sister dear,” she laughed, prancing about just out of reach of Sabriana’s lunges, “for if you tell Mama, I will tell her AND Papa of the scandalous way you’ve been behaving with Rodi.”

“Scandalous?” cried her sister in a high pitched voice. She tried to sound affronted, but it only made her sound nervous and her cheeks flushing a scarlet red gave her away entirely. “Rodilon and I are merely friends, Sarine, we always have been.”

“Aye, and that explains why you stepped away from him so hastily when you discovered yourselves not to be alone!” crowed Sarine gleefully and pranced towards the door. “Just wait ‘til Mama finds out how foolishly you’ve been behaving. Letting the poor boy think you’re in love with him. I can hardly wait to sit there and watch you squirm as she yells and carries on. And our father! Whatever will he say? He’ll have you married off to the first willing Lord he can find!”

Sabriana scowled at her sister’s gleeful teasing and forced herself to relax. She recognized her sister’s banter for what it was and forced herself not to despair. Sarine loved her too much and cared too much for her happiness to tell their parents what transpired between herself and Rodilon. Truly Sabriana often thought her sister’s teasing stemmed more from her envy of the elder sister’s romance than a belief that what she did was wrong. She smiled at Sarine and the girl grinned impishly back.

“You mean it not, dear sister,” said Sabriana, keeping the smile on her face, but her tone holding sincerity and seriousness.

“Of course I mean it!” cried Sarine, assuming an affronted pose and expression. “Dare you doubt my word?”

“Yes, I dare to doubt your word when you’re being silly,” said Sabriana with a chiding tone and a smile. Sarine laughed.

“Aye, but ‘tis fun all the same, sister dear.”

Sabriana bowed her head, thinking perhaps one of these days her sister’s jokes would go too far, but she said nothing, letting the younger girl have her fun.
