Sabriana sighed as she looked down one last time on her father’s hold. She would be coming back, but her life would no longer be as it was. H’lian looked over his shoulder at her and smiled and she tried to force a smile in return but it would not come.

“Am I right in saying that you’re not very happy about your new situation?” asked H’lian and Sabriana looked up at him in surprise.

“No, you’re right, I’m not happy,” she said, watching him as he nodded his head. “Was it that obvious?”

“Just then, yes, but Jumarth told me first.”

“What?” said Sabriana looking from the rider to the dragon and back again.

“Why do you think I’m a Searchrider? My dragon is very sensitive to humans,” he replied with a chuckle at her bewildered expression.

“Oh, I see,” she said, turning away to continue looking over the hold as Jumarth circled lazily above it. She frowned, wondering why they hadn’t jumped between yet, but apparently H’lian wasn’t done talking to her.

“You know, you don’t have to go marry this guy,” said H’lian and Sabriana’s head snapped up.

“Of course I do, I’m betrothed,” she said, looking down again with a sigh.

“But if Jumarth and I announced you Searched you’d be free of that.”

“Just like that?” asked Sabriana, a pensive look on her face.

“Just like that,” replied H’lian with a smile, “but you’d best make your decision quick because we’d have to head for the Weyr now.”

“Let’s go,” said Sabriana, a real smile spreading across her lips for the first time in days.
