I refer to myself as Shamanic because in my rituals I often find myself identifying with the animal spirits of the world. Perhaps it comes from being raised with cats always around me but I relate to the archetypal qualities of cats large and small, and to wolves in a lesser degree, although my fascination with sparkly things leads others to tell me I have a streak of raven in me.. I have often been told I am very cat-like in nature, and I honestly feel more comfortable with my cats than I do with most humans. I have done Shamanic vision-quests and journeys, and I feel truly blessed because in one journey I saw myself being led through my quest by Spider, Owl, Wolf, and Jaguar. They led me to an old Native Shaman who passed me a beautiful beaded choker and then led me outside to meet the White Buffalo. I am still working on the images in my mind but I know the White Buffalo is very important in Native legend. I hope to study more of the Native American legends and learn as much as I can about the Totem animals I saw on that quest.
In my opinion there is a great deal we can learn from the animal world regarding tolerance, wisdom, and how to behave with decency towards others. If we want to claim that we are superior we'd better start living up to our alleged superiority. From where I stand, the beings that can survive a winter in the woods without any supplies or little luxuries, and do no damage to the environment in the process, are the superior ones. |
