One day, they were hired by a local Shogun to kill off some other Shogun, and take hostage their castle. They would be rewarded 'Whatever amount of money they wished' by doing the task, and so Bankotsu agreed, and they went off to do their job.
They accomplished what they were told to do, and sat by the beginning of a mountain, joking about Daimyou's, and how they always had someone to fight. Then they heard more hooveprints, and assumed that it was just the backup the castle had sent for before it was to late- it was pretty much to late for the castle, but that's not who was coming.
It turned out, all the Daimyou's had united together just for the one soul purpose of killing off the Shichinintai.
"The Shichinintai is to dangerous to be let alive, even as allies!" the captain of the army declared. Bankotsu cursed, and told his groupt to flee.
but they were caught, tortured, and beheaded.
Basically, they were tricked and screwed over.
And on that day when he had died, Bankotsu had killed 999 men with Oohoko he called a Banryuu.

Years later, Naraku revived the Shichinintai- planning to use them to kill off Inuyasha, Kouga, and any other idiot who stood in his way. Bankotsu readily agreed to this:
"We're alive and kicking again, so what does it matter?"
They first seeked revenge on those who had wronged them, though. Bankotsu, upon meeteing up with the rest of the Shichinintai (Minus two, who had died), told them of his plan to invade and destroy the traiterous Daimyou's castle, and retrieve his precious 'Aibou'. he also told of how he had killed exactly 999 men before he died. He looked down at the threatening note that he had had Renkotsu write for him. It read 'Wash your necks, we're coming'- this was the proper way to say that your neck should be clean for the beheading.
and how the Daimyou would be his 1,000'th.
So he went to the castle, he attacked, he killed the Daimyou- who tried persuading him to join him to resist death- and he reclaimed his Banryuu.
He waited in the torn up Village by the castle with Jakotsu, when Kouga came. The shichinintai immediatley began to fight him, and Bankotsu lamost killed him, when Inuyasha arrived and blocked Bankotsu's attack with Tetsusaiga.
The Inu-tachi and Shichinintai fought eachother for a while, when Inuyasha used Kaze No Kizu, and almost killed Bankotsu- if it weren't for the fact that Naraku's Poisen Insects arrived, hurried Bankotsu out, while Naraku sent one of his dopplegangers to fight Inuyasha and company as a distraction.
So the Shichinintai got away, and went to Mt. Hakurei to await further instructions. Kohaku arrived with Kanna, and told them to go fight and kill Inuyasha's brother, Sesshoumaru. A little comflct about WHO would fight Sesshoumaru began (See the funny scenes section!)
But it ended up that Jakotsu would. Meanwhile, Bankotsu went to go to sacred island that was to hold a great monk that reached nirvana(or something like that!). Bankotsu and Inuyasha fought, but Inuyasha couldn't use Kaze No Kizu because of the islands barrier. Miroku and the willage leaders son broke the barrier by damaging a holy Dokko, and Inuyasha could use Kaze no Kizu again.
But then the Holy dokko began going on Bankotsu's side after Kagome shot her arrow through Bankotsu's arm.
Bankotsu then disapeared in a poof of pizie dust! lol, ok so it wasn't pixie dust, but more like a shmmering mist.
He got transported to some shrine on Mt. Hakurei, and saw that Naraku had kidnapped the dead monks body.
