Episode 1: ANGRY? Lina's Furious Dragon Slave! |
Behind the strong bars of a dark cage, a huge dragon suddenly opens its eyes, and lets out a fierce roar. The scene shifts down to a doorway, and within, some bandits are celebrating, and basking in their treasure. The bandit leader was just saying how great it was to be a bandit, and throwing coins out to his fellow plunderers, when a large ball of fire suddenly shot out of nowhere, and set the whole hideout ablaze. "What the hell is going on?" demanded the bandit leader. "Over there!" another bandit said, pointing to the source of the chaos. It was discovered that a mere girl had somehow managed all this. The bandit leader gasped in fear, and recognized her as "that rotten little, magic using, bandit killer... Lina Inverse!" "That's me!" Lina exclaims, and fires another fireball that obliterates the bandit leader. Commenting about putting a stop to evil, and how she should keep on fighting, Lina unceremoniously steals the bandits' treasure, and gives it to herself, to the immense frustration of the remaining bandits. Walking by herself through a forest path with a large bag slung over her shoulder, Lina knows that she is being followed; that bandits wanted their treasure back. "Why don't you just come out?" she asks. One of the bandits indeed appeared out of the trees, her suspicions confirmed. The bandit announced that he was supposed to pay back Lina for stealing their treasure, and avenge the boss, but he decided that he really didn't want to kill her... With a shrug, Lina says "great", and gets up to leave. However, the bandit hastily tells her to wait, and makes her a proposal: To join the Dragon Fangs, and become a member of their bandit gang. Lina says that she wouldn't stoop as low as to join a bunch of bandits, and tells him to get lost. The bandit was enraged at how she treated him. Instead of thanking him for sparing her life, she refuses his offer. With a gesture, he makes all of the other following bandits jump out of the trees. "This is it; I mean, this is all the guys you've got?" Lina asks, gesturing to the dozens of men around her. "What do you mean 'this is it'? On my word, they'll cut you to pieces!" the bandit threatens, but Lina merely turns up her nose at this. Just as the bandits were about to attack, and Lina was preparing to cast a spell, a mysterious blonde-haired man shows up out of nowhere, and everyone looks up from what they were doing. When the bandits asked his name, he coolly responded. "There's no name to tell to the likes of you". Single-handedly, the blonde-haired man was able to defeat all of the bandits with his unbelievable swordsmanship. Lina was going to tell him she didn't need help, but she decided that this was the part when she was supposed to act like a "scared and shrieky heroine", and pretends to scream for help (although perhaps a bit too gleefully). After finishing off the last bandit, the rescuer turns to face Lina... And gasps. Taking a cautious step forward, he stops, apparently with shock. Lina nods her head in an understanding way. "He's dazzled by my beauty", she thinks. "If there's one thing I have confidence in, it's my looks." The man sighs, and although Lina took this as another "compliment", the man merely stated, "it's a kid". "WHAT?" Lina yelled, completely caught off-guard. While he was hoping to find a "luscious damsel in distress", he had found a "wide-eyed, flat-chested little kid". At this point, Lina became self-conscious about her looks and figure, and thought miscellaneous annoyed thoughts to herself. She thanked him out of good manners (although she was angry beyond belief), but the man didn't miss a beat in asking where Lina's parents were, and if he could walk her home. Lina was, again, furious over this, but managed to keep her cool, and continued to play the part of the "little girl". When she explained that she was traveling to Atlas City alone, the blonde-haired man said that it was too dangerous, and officially decided to become her bodyguard, to accompany her to Atlas City. Lina sighed, and wondered why this guy didn't "catch a clue". The undaunted swordsman chose this point to reveal his identity - his name was Gourry, and he was a travelling mercenary. After some consideration, Lina decided that the man was "genuinely concerned about her". She introduced herself as Lina Inverse to Gourry, and they both headed off to a restaurant to eat. As Gourry's treat, she could order anything she wanted. To the total disbelief of the waiter, they each ordered 12 dishes to eat, and then ate with the speed and ferocity of a pack of wolves. The scene shifts back to the cage. After the bandit hideout was destroyed, the place lied in ruin. By straining hard, the dragon breaks free of his chains, and flies out of the cage to freedom, roaring fiercely all the way. Back at the restaurant, Lina and Gourry have finished eating, and were remarking how full they were. Suddenly, an old man approached their table, and introduced himself as the village elder, Saman. He asked if he was mistaken in meeting "the famous sorcery genius, Lina Inverse". Lina responded that he wasn't, to the surprise of Gourry. "Why didn't you tell me you were a sorceress?" he asked. "Didn't the outfit give you a clue?" Lina asked back. "Oh, I thought it was a type of schoolgirl uniform," Gourry responded, laughing. Lina's eyes flared. "What kind of schoolgirl wears this?? I bet you never even went to school!" she yelled indignantly. After calming them down, Saman pleaded that the village needed the assistance of the bandit killer, the dragon spooker Lina Inverse. Lina said she could understand the "bandit killer" title, but she didn't know what "dragon spooker" implied. "It's short for Dragons Step Past Out Of Clear Revulsion", the elder explained. "WHY, YOU!" Lina yells, about to throw a chair at Saman. "I didn't make it up. I heard it from other people, I swear!" Saman insists rather hastily. Then, he told of the problem of a roaming gang of bandits that were causing a lot of trouble. "Would you be talking about the Dragon Fangs?" Lina asked. "Yes, have you heard of them?" Saman asked. Lina then explained that she and Gourry had already wiped out the Dragon Fangs over the past couple of days. Overjoyed, Saman exclaimed that the Dragon Fangs had been keeping "that dragon" as a pet. When it was alive, the village soldiers couldn't fight it, because it was too powerful. As a result, the villagers had to do whatever the Dragon Fangs wanted. However, now that the great Lina Inverse had slain the black dragon, everyone was saved! He rushed out the door, planning to tell everyone the good news. Lina and Gourry exchanged odd looks. "Uh, did you kill the dragon?" and "I didn't know they had one." were some of the comments they shared. However, after some debate, Lina decided that "it's not our dragon, it's not our village, and it's not our problem", so they wouldn't have to deal with it. Gourry, however, looked like he considered otherwise . Suddenly, someone screamed "Dragon!", and a black dragon was seen flying overhead. Saman rushed back into the restaurant. "You didn't kill the dragon! Why did you lie to me?" he demanded. When Lina explained that they had killed the Dragon Fangs, not the dragon, and that they didn't even know there was a dragon, things looked pretty hopeless. "Now we're all doomed," sighed Saman. Outside, the dragon was flying around, wreaking havoc on the village wherever it went. Meanwhile, Lina and Saman were discussing the situation, and they decided that Saman would pay Lina 25 gold pieces to destroy the dragon (definitely not a bargain). When they ran up to face the dragon, though, Lina discovered that it was huge. "Where did a bunch of bandits get that thing?!" Lina asked, incredulous. Saman explained that the bandit leader had bought the dragon for 5 bronze pieces when he was a boy. Back then, the dragon had been very small, but it was raised lovingly to its current enormous size. All of a sudden, the dragon bellowed again, and released a stream of fire in their direction! Although Lina and Gourry got out of the way, the old man was burned to a crisp. "You'd better go hide... too late..." Lina remarked bluntly, and then turned to face the dragon. "Fireball!" she yelled, firing the spell at the black dragon. The surrounding villagers both looked shocked and hopeful, but when the smoke cleared, the dragon stood standing strong. Next, Gourry tried. He jumped up to try and hit it with his sword, but he missed, and fell to the ground, a long fall. The dragon started walking in their direction, and Lina and Gourry both held their breath as it was about to trample both of them. Just as it was about to do so, the dragon stopped abruptly. With a pained look on his face, he let out a squawk-like sound, and stepped over them. "Hey, I guess you really are a dragon spooker," Gourry commented helpfully. Lina was furious. "How dare you embarrass me like that!" she yelled indignantly at the beast, and claimed she would take it out with one shot. Levitating, she hurled Gourry in the direction of the dragon, and told Gourry to distract it. Gourry was basically helpless as the dragon shot flames at him, and tried to get Gourry's sword off him. Back where she was levitating, Lina started a long chant. "Darkness beyond twilight... Crimson beyond blood that flows..." it began. "LINA, HE'S BURNING MY BOTTOM OFF!" Gourry yelled as she was reciting the spell. "Buried in the stream of time is where your power grows...." she continued. "I pledge myself to conquer, all the foes who stand... before the mighty gift bestowed in my unworthy hand... Let the fools who stand before me be destroyed.... By the power you and I possess!" When she finished the chanting, she looked up, and yelled "DRAGONSLAVE!" A huge ball of energy shot toward the dragon, and made everything explode in an inferno (including poor Gourry). When the smoke cleared, the dragon was gone, and Gourry was fine, although rather bruised up in the rubble. However, also out of the ruins rose Saman, who wasn't looking so great himself. Severely charred and very angry-looking, the village elder strode up to where Lina and Gourry was standing. "Ah, just the person I wanted to see," Lina declared. "Can I have the payment for destroying the dragon?" "Dragon?" Saman repeated incredulously. "What about our village?!" Zooming out, the entire village was seen to be reduced to a giant crater. Gourry just sat shocked with his mouth open, but Lina only smiled. "Yeah, the Dragon Slave's pretty powerful, isn't it?" she remarked casually. "It's TOO powerful!" countered Saman, as the other villagers rose out of the rubble with assorted villager weapons. "Yeah, I guess it is," Lina responded. "Well, I'll let you handle this," she decided, tapping on Gourry's armor, and then ran off. "HEY!" Gourry yelled, and then laughed nervously as the villagers gave even more menacing looks. Together, Lina and Gourry ran for their lives as they were chased savagely out of the village. |
