Episode 2: BAD! Mummy Men Aren't My Type! |
Out of the remains of a huge crater, a trail of red smoke billows off into the sky. On a cliff to the lower left, two mysterious stand looking at it, their capes moving in the wind. The first man, clad in a tan cloak, seemed to have blueish-colored hair sticking out from under the hood, and the skin where his eyes were showing looked to be a very odd color. "I didn't believe it at first, but it's true," he mutters. "She actually used the Dragonslave!" the second man says, in a doubting tone. He was clad in a black cloak, and he looked very much like a mummy with his head all bandaged, and only his left eye showing. The first man remarked that Lina was certainly no amateur magician. Surprisingly, this caused the second man to become very angry. It was because of Lina that he had ended up in his injured condition. In a flashback he has, money was being thrown to the bandits back at the Dragon Fangs' hideout, when suddenly everything burst into flames when Lina arrived. About to cast a lightning spell to defend, the man stops and says "What?" in a surprised way when he realizes it's Lina who's suddenly shown up. Back then, the man was in perfect health. "Flare Arrow!" shouted Lina, and she threw her spell in the direction of the man. He cowered and hid behind his cape, but the spell hit him head-on, resulting in an explosion. The flashback ended, the man continues to express his anger, saying how his bandages were all her fault. As a result, he has to walk about like a mummy; it is seen that his entire body is indeed covered in bandages. "The things I'm going to do to that girl!" he says evilly, laughing hysterically and clenching his fingers. "In that case, we'll have to catch up with her," the first man responds calmly. "We have to retrieve the 'item' that she stole from us." Still laughing insanely, the second man continued his rantings. The first man got a pained look on his face and sweatdropped in return. Elsewhere, the sign of a magic shop swung back and forth. Lina and Gourry ran up to the window, and Lina saw that the shop indeed sold magical items. She was about to start selling her treasure, when she decided that using some magic, she could make the treasure worth more. So, she decided that a nearby abandoned tower would do just fine for what she was planning. Lina told Gourry to wait there, in the magic shop, and Gourry asked, "Where are you going, Lina?" Lina was pleased at this; "Not calling me 'little girl' anymore, are you?" she asked. Gourry smiled nervously. "Well, I figure that if I call a sorceress that can blow up a dragon a kid, she'll get mad and blow me up, too!" Lina responded that this would make things easier, and headed off for the tower. Once inside, Lina chose a room, and used a lighting spell to be able to see. Opening her cloak, it's discovered that she actually had been carrying around dozens of bags of treasure all this time. Letting go of her heavy load, she examined her catch. First, she saw an Orihalcon statue, a rare find. Next, she discovered an odd knife; it looked good, but Lina believed there was some sort of spell on it. Then, she looked over some of the coins she'd looted. Her eyes sparkled. "A coin collector will flip over these!" she exclaimed, examining one and putting it back down. Finally, she looked at the gems she had gotten. "That's just what I'd expect from those types of bandits," she commented; the flawed rubies she'd taken wouldn't sell for much. But she knew just how to fix that. She decides to use a trick to sell them. Taking a crystal ball out of her pouch, she used some magic to make it spin, and emit light. Then, she put a magic circle on the path of one of the rays of light. After she made sure it faced north, she began the spell. Putting a gem in the center of the circle and putting a playing card on top of that, she chanted a short incantation, forming the ruby into a pretty crystal. She took some magic powder, and repeatedly used magic to emit a flash, and then dropped the powder onto the gem. Gourry was bored back at the shop. "When is Lina gonna be done?" he wondered, yawning. Now, Lina took some special liquid, and poured it on the powder-covered ruby. After chanting yet another incantation, the crystal glowed brilliantly, and emitted a bright flash of light. After the light went away, the ruby looked like a mere smoking lump of clay. However, Lina exclaimed, "I did it! Now, just wait!" In a matter of seconds, the crystal had cooled into a beautiful glittering gem, a magical amulet of protection. "Now I can sell it at a good price!" Lina declared, laughing to herself at her success. "No time to laugh. Got do them all," she decided, and went back to work. The scene shifts, and Lina is running back toward the shop. Calling for the shopkeeper, she yells that she has lots of good stuff to sell, and runs right past the startled Gourry. Placing her goods on the counter, she waits for the shopkeeper. Upon his arrival, he says, "Welcome! Well, let's see what you've got!" in a friendly way. Examining one of the gems, he comments that she has quite a bit of talent if she's able to make gems of that quality. "Lina, you can make these, too?" Gourry asks, confused. Lina coughs, ignoring Gourry and continuing business. "You're a good sorceress," the shopkeeper comments. "I think I can give you a good price for this." Lina smiles, and says that she knew she could count on him. Next, the shopkeeper picks up the knife. "This is an unusual piece," he comments. He notices that there's probably a spell on it, too. Unsheathing the blade, and looking at it, he says, "Uh-huh, and for this..." "For that?" Lina asks eagerly. The blade suddenly flashed as the shopkeeper turned the knife, and his face was transformed. "I'll take it if you sell me something else, too..." he mutters, as his eyes glow a demon red. "Oh? What?" Lina asks, curious. Suddenly jumping up in insane fury, the shopkeeper hollers, "Your lives!" Lina gasps and barely has time to hold up the Orihalcon statue to defend herself. Orihalcon is far stronger than the blade of a knife, but as for offense, a statue won't do any good. Gourry tried to hold the shopkeeper off, but the crazed man merely flung him off. Licking his knife like a madman, the shopkeeper begins to advance on them. Gourry is oblivious to why Lina would just give such a dangerous weapon to the guy. "Yes, Gourry, that was my plan," Lina says sarcastically. They run for the door, but it's blocked by chairs and tables from when the man was blindly slashing the knife around. Looking behind them, things look hopeless. The shopkeeper looks completely insane now, and he's laughing to himself evilly as he comes closer. "This is not good," Lina says, smiling nervously. Outside, the sign of the magic shop swings wildly, and crashes are heard. Lina and Gourry yell as they kick down the door and run out, with the man following close behind. Gourry reaches for his sword, but Lina tells him that he can't bring it out; it isn't the man's fault. "Well then, why don't you cast a spell?" Gourry asks Lina, "to make him go to sleep?" Lina shrugs. "Well, I could, but..." "You don't feel like it, is that it?" Gourry asks. "So if I don't do something, we're finished?" "That's about right," Lina smiles. And Gourry finally thinks of the only way he knows... RUN! Lina grabbed him by the hair, so he wouldn't run off. She complains that he can't just leave the shopkeeper like this. As they're exchanging a few quick words about what to do, the shopkeeper lunges with his knife. Thrusting the knife between them, Lina and Gourry jump away in opposite directions. Once again, he licks his knife menacingly; it's disgusting. Facing Lina, he swings the knife randomly. Lina says that there's no other choice; Gourry should draw his sword. Energy emitting from Gourry as he draws his weapon, the shopkeeper grimaces and gets ready to fight back. Out of nowhere, the shutters on the second floor of his shop slam open. "GOOFING AGAIN, HUH? I CAN'T LEAVE YOU ALONE FOR A SECOND!" a large woman screams. "NOW GET BACK IN HERE, AND GET BACK TO WORK, OR I'LL USE THAT KNIFE ON YOU MYSELF!" The window shutters crack and break as they're slammed back down. The man looks scared, and the spell is seen leaving him. "Coming, dear!" he yells, and runs back into the shop. Gourry catches the knife by the handle. "I guess a wife like that is stronger than a cursed knife," Lina mutters. "I'd rather life with the curse," Gourry decides, shaking his head. Continuing on their journey, Gourry walks calmly along the road, while Lina runs around in circles, complaining of hunger. Gourry brings himself up tall. "There are some times in life when you've just got to take it like a man," he says proudly. "Well, I'm NOT a man!" Lina reminds him. "Oh, yeah..." responds Gourry sheepishly. That night, they stop at a lake to rest. Taking a piece of her hair and putting a spell on it, Lina ties the hair to a stick. She fishes out a HUGE fish at least 3-4 feet long. While Lina and Gourry are eating, Gourry is commenting about how disgusting it is that Lina's eating the center of the fish. He informs her that they used disgusting green worms for bait, and that they hadn't even bothered to clean out the fish, meaning Lina was eating the worms, too. At this, Lina looks sick, and promptly spits out what she was currently eating. Finally, they decide on a location to eat. Going to a restaurant in town, they settle down and began to eat. Gourry is discussing Lina's magic capabilities with her. Lina explains that it was easy to use her magic to catch that large fish before, while she's gulping down chicken. "Oh, so, you can do little tricks besides that overkill Dragonslave thing," Gourry says. Lina nods. "Any idiot can learn a few tricks," she explains. Looking proud and wagging her finger back and forth, she says that you can't be the best without learning both the big, and the small, spells. Gourry claps his hands together. After hearing what'd she'd said, he says he'll just leave all "those guys" to her. Lina blinks in confusion. Then, she discovered what Lina was talking about. The door to the shop slammed open, and the "mummy man" seen in the beginning of the episode walks in, along with a bunch of trolls. The other people in the restaurant watch them cautiously, and from a distance. The man seemed to be looking for someone. Finding Lina, he points and says, "That girl!" Lina plays the innocent part, and says stuff like "Oh my! What's going on?" She lies, and claims her name is Sophia. Perhaps they were looking for this other girl that looks kind of like her, and... The mummy man suddenly bursts in, telling her to shut up. He knows who she is, and that she's the one who stole all of the bandit treasure. Gourry leans in. "You mean there's another girl just like you?" he asks. "I'll explain later," Lina whispers. Lina admits her identity, and loudly asks to take the fight outside. The mummy man looks startled, then regains his composure, and asks the fight to be inside. Haughtily, Lina says that he can't possibly win. In an instant, the fight began. Lina jumped to and fro everywhere, hitting the trolls. Then, a strange green light appeared on her finger, and she touched a lot of trolls with the spell. Then, Lina makes a strange request: she wants Gourry to hit the trolls with any little wound he can come up with, even though trolls have nearly instantaneous healing powers. Using a trick with his fingers, he shoots three small objects at 3 trolls. The mummy man smirks, and says that it's a good trick, but it can't defeat the trolls. Oddly enough, the 3 trolls groaned, and were sucked into the wound, exploding. The man screamed, not knowing what was going on. Lina explains that the spell had reversed the trolls' healing capabilities, turning their amazing healing against themselves. A troll lunged at Lina. In an instant, she drew out her sword, and plunged it into the troll. However, she couldn't pull out the sword afterwards. Gourry saw that the troll was trapping her, leaving her open to attack from other trolls. Just as he was going to do something, she cast a Digger Volt spell through the sword, electrocuting the troll, and making him fall to the ground. The mummy man just gaped. Cracking her knuckles, Lina asks, "Now then, shall we get down to business?" She began to chant the incantation for a Fireball, and drew back her hand, prepared to launch it. The mummy man shrieked, and ordered his trolls to retreat. After running out the door, Lina revealed to the cowering Gourry that the Fireball was actually yet another Lighting spell. The restaurant owner came up, very angry, and demanded that they be punished for ruining his business. However, Lina merely gave him a gem, and the happy owner was on his way, the problem solved. Gourry commented that she sure was good at telling lies. "You talk too much," Lina said, and punched him in the stomach, making him fall over. Now, Lina and Gourry sat at a table in a hotel. Lina says that to find them so easily, the mummy man probably had some sort of thing to track him. She says that probably one of the pieces of treasure is leading the enemies to them. After Gourry explains, Lina dismisses the "class". Suddenly, someone knocks on the door. "I wish to make a purchase," a voice says. "An item you possess." Outside the door, it is seen that the tan-cloaked man from the beginning of the episode has arrived, his odd-colored hair and skin peeking out from under his hood. "I will pay any price you name," he declares. "Who is this guy?" Lina asks to herself. "You'll have to watch the next episode to find out." Gourry puts on a disbelieving chibi face at this advertising attempt. "To be continued..." |
