Episode 12: LOVELY! Amelia's Magic Training! |
Another clear day is seen, panning down to a band of four "merry" travellers. Lina is currently preoccupied with complaining. "Ooh, I'm tired..." Lina groaned, commenting about the way the road didn't seem to end. "Where the heck IS Seyruun?" Although Amelia assured Lina that, with a "heart full of justice", the journey would be brief, Lina didn't competely buy it, and so continued on her way, limping "merrily". A bird suddenly flew down, and landed... putting its feet right on Lina's face. It then gave an ugly squawk. Lina couldn't take any more. Flinging her arms to the heavens, she yelled for the bird to get off, and the animal flew away, squawking all the way. Meanwhile, Amelia, Phil, and Gourry were crowded around a map Phil was holding. "According to this map, a town should be nearby," Phil announced. Lina's sullen mood quickly turned to that of an eager one. Racing up the nearest tree, she put her hand to her forehead to shield the sun, and shrieked, "A town?! Where? Where? Where? Food! Baths! Soft beds! Bandits!" She suddenly paused in realization, surveying the scene. "Bandits?" Indeed, there was a group of bandits not far ahead, and Lina had the good fortune to sight them, first. Racing down to the ground, Lina prepared to launch an attack. However, Amelia started sprinting toward the scene before Lina even had a chance to move. The head bandit chuckled, his sword pointing towards the merchant. He commented about how taking a deserted road was like begging to be robbed. He wrenched his sword back, preparing to strike. Amelia would have none of this! Yelling for the bandit to stop, everyone turned to look at her. Both the bandits and the merchant looked at the young girl, panting for breath on the path, not far away. Taking a deep breath, Amelia ran up the nearest tree. She then panted for breath again, earning more stares. After launching a quick justice speech, Amelia leapt off the tree dramatically, and the bandits merely stared as she fell out of the air powerfully, landing on a target... The merchant. Amelia quickly realized that she'd made a mistake. "I landed on the person I was trying to save!" she commented sheepishly. After she'd got herself into the mess, there was no way out. Another bandit, taking advantage of Amelia's predicament, held a sword next to Amelia's head. "What say we teach her not to get in our way?" he asked, cruelly. Amelia turned around, frightened. "Okay, okay, hold everything," Lina suddenly stepped in, clapping her hands to get attention. Simply waltzing in next to Amelia, Lina asked, "Cripes, what's wrong with you?" The bandit put his hand on Lina's shoulder, demanding to know who this bold intruder was. Lina smiled a casual glance back, and warned the bandit to get his hands off her. "Otherwise, I might hit you..." she finished, and promptly punched the bandit in the face. Lina struck a pose, and suddenly began taking down all the bandits using her hands and feet alone! The bandit leader looked on, impressed. "She's pretty good," he commented. In her turn, Amelia yelled, "That's the way, Miss Lina!" The bandit's eyes widened. "What?! LINA?!!!" Obviously, he knew her name. As Lina finished another bandit, the bandit leader muttered her description to himself, realizing that it was, indeed, Lina, the Bandit Killer. And he exclaimed it. As the other bandits heard their boss, they all realized as well, and began fleeing for their lives. With a yell, they took off through the forest, trying to lose Lina through the trees. It was as if a mad mountain lion were after them. Lina was unfazed. "One bandit killer coming up!" she announced. Preparing the spell, she fired the attack: "DRAGONSLAVE!" As the bandits flew off as specks into the distance, fire seemed to blaze behind Lina in her triumph, and she struck another pose - one of victory. Gourry looked on, dumbfounded. "You..." he muttered, obviously believing that Lina had gone overboard. He had the merchant swung over his shoulder to support him; the merchant was still dazed. Phil looked on with a big smile. And, as Amelia's eyes widened exponentially, she broke into a big grin as well. "That was cool!" she exclaimed. The town is seen from an overhead view. There are many paths around lots of grass everywhere, and many buildings can be seen around the landscape. However, far the most noticeable, was a huge hill that composed of the entire middle of the town. There were paths there as well, however, so obviously the townspeople weren't hindered greatly by it. Along one row of buildings, there was a restaurant. The four travelers entered, and Lina talked excitedly about food. She ordered to waitress to just bring food. "I don't care what it is!" she declared boldly. As Lina, Amelia, Gourry, and Phil each eat at one of the four chairs around the table, Lina paused, glancing at Amelia, who had a smile on her face. "What's up, Amelia?" Lina asked, a bit puzzled. Amelia clenched her fists. "Miss Lina, I didn't realize you were so famous!" she said in admiration and awe. "You're such a true defender against evil!" Lina and Gourry both gaped back at Amelia's words, though both Amelia and Phil were grinning back, as Amelia continued to praise the justice Lina was bringing about. "Well, it isn't QUITE like that," Lina replied, sheepishly. Gourry wore the same sarcastic look he always got when stuff like this came up. "Very much not like that, if you ask me..." he muttered. "I've made up my mind! I will follow you, so I can become a true defender of justice!" Amelia declared. "So please - can you teach me the Dragon Slave?" For a split second, time seemed to stop, as both Lina and Gourry absolutely gaped at the question. The screen is suddenly filled with a huge, exaggerated version of Lina's face, and chibi-Gourry is seen, dazed, flailing about Lina's huge mouth. "WHAT?!!" Lina exclaimed, very loudly. All the people of the restaurant turned at the sound to the four, wondering what was going on. "Do you know what sort of spell the Dragon Slave is?!" Lina demanded. Very naive, Amelia replied that it was "a spell for punishing bad guys". Lina and Gourry shared yet another hesitant, gaping moment. The scene suddenly focused on Lina, who was thinking, "One more example of her ultimate skill at totally missing the point!" Amelia clenched her fists again, and declared that she would undertake any training it took. "Splendid, daughter!" Phil exclaimed, and marveled at how dedicated Amelia was. "Father!" Amelia exclaimed joyfully. "Daughter!" Phil exclaimed back, as the two went into a warm embrace. The people of the restaurant started to cheer, and some clapped their hands, commerating the occassion. Red, yellow, and blue strips of confetti rained down ceremoniously. "So, will you do it, Miss Lina?" Amelia asked again, as Phil looked on. They both grinned largely at her. Lina's eyes had been reduced to little dots, and her mouth was in a triangle of simplicity. Clearly, she was dumbfounded at how the situation was turning out; it looked like she didn't have much of a choice. "What is WITH these two...?" she thought, as confetti danced over her face. The scene switches, and the same overhead view of the town is shown. Only this time, the sun very brilliantly illuminates the whole beautiful landscape from the left, seeming to make everything sparkle. The mood has turned to one of adventure and new journeys. As the scene zooms in on the spot at the very top of the hill, various large stones can be seen in odd positions, quite like Stonehenge in this world. Zooming even closer, Amelia and Philionel are seen standing on one of the rocks, high up in the air. Their capes billow in the breeze rather dramatically. "Do you understand? The path of justice is hard and strict!" Phil is saying. He strikes an amazingly fiery pose, shouting about persuing goals to the very end, while Amelia shrieks, "LET'S DO IT!" Lina and Gourry are watching the increasingly powerful, albeit weird, scene from behind a couple of rocks nearby, hidden. "So then why do I have to teach her the Dragon Slave?" Lina muttered to herself. Gourry asked if Lina was really going to teach the spell, and Lina explicitly stated that she wasn't. Lina explained that since Amelia specialized in white magic, it would be insane to teach her to the most powerful spell in black magic. Although she tried to get it into Gourry's head that black magic and white magic were utter opposites, he didn't understand, as usual. Simplifying things, Lina yelled, "And what do you think Miss 'Justice Above All' will do the minute she learns the Dragon Slave?!" Using what tiny reasoning skills he had, Gourry uttered a "Hmmm" of thought, and started to imagine a scene that would take place. A bunch of shapeless purple and black clouds floated about for a bit, and then a shiny coin is seen; it glittered on the ground. A man showed up, and yelled, "Oh! I found a coin!" Suddenly, Amelia showed up. "That's stealing! Stealing is bad!" she shrieked. "Dragon Slave!" The man is blown away from the area, yelling. "Oh, it feels so good to triumph in the name of justice!" she exclaimed. Phil, of course, was there to heartily congratulate Amelia on a job well done. The flashback over, Lina is seen squatting in the dirt, idly drawing circles in the ground with her finger. Gourry has his head tilted over to one side, wearing a look of utter stupidity. "Hmmm... It's kinda scary...." he commented. Lina once again stated that she really didn't want to teach the spell, but it looked like Amelia was too fired up to be refused... Suddenly, Amelia called for Lina to come out; she wanted to start the training. Both Lina and Gourry looked over the rocks in hesitation, and then Lina started laughing evilly, earning an odd look from Gourry. "All right, get ready for some serious training!" Lina yelled. "OK!" Amelia yelled back. Gourry tried to stop Lina, knowing that teaching the Dragon Slave would cause disaster, but Lina merely broke into another open round of disturbing laughter. Suddenly, she cut herself off - "First off, gimme 5000 Hindu squats!" she ordered. Amelia happily accepted, to Gourry's utter disbelief. "Lina..." he said hesitantly. Lina knew that Amelia wouldn't take "no" for an answer, so they would just need to put her through the "special training" until she gave up. As Amelia started the squats, Phil merely looked on in acknowledgement. A mood of determination had started up; Amelia wouldn't back down easily. In the next scene, Amelia is seen at the bottom of a cliff, apparently having finished her previous training. A huge boulder is hurled over the side of the cliff, and Amelia, with great strength, catches it, using her whole body as support for it. She looks on with determined eyes. "I will not lose," she whispered, and then she broke the rock to pieces as her eyes flashed, "No matter what the training..." Amelia holds a wooden stick over her head, with Gourry sitting on one end, and Philionel on the other. She hops up the extremely steep hill, letting out a sigh of fatigue with each hop. She carts along a gigantic black steamroller-type object, probably carting more weight than oxen normally do. "I will become... A great ally of justice," she continued. Amelia is wearing a powerful movement-restricting device, and hurls a rock into the distance. Gourry watches from behind a tree, in silent respect. A single star flashed brilliantly in the night sky, and a hand is seen pointing up to it. Amelia strikes a pose, and her cape flaps in the breeze. "Just like Miss Lina!" she finished, triumphantly. It is daytime again, and the excited mood of the previous day had slowed down greatly. Amelia carts along a wagon filled to the brim with heavy belongings up a very steep hill, with her father sitting at the top as an extra bonus. She was panting heavily from the effort; it looked like Lina's seemingly impossible training had finally started to get to her. "It's been three days since the training started," Phil commently slowly. "So, have you even gotten a hint of how to do the Dragon Slave yet?" Amelia manages to say, between breaths, "No... not yet... still... haven't... quite... gotten... the... fundamentals... yet..." Phil reminds her that she's cooked, cleaned, and basically done everything for Lina, as well as went through extremely touch training, but the Dragon Slave wasn't being taught; he felt that something was very wrong. Phil suddenly got off the cart, ready to help Amelia. "Here, let me do that." Amelia immediately protested; the help would interfere with her training. As she turned around frantically to get her dad to stop, the cart wasn't being held, and the steep slope of the hill began pulling the cart along very fast. Amelia tried hastily to stop it, with Phil in front also acting as the breaks, both of them yelling all the way. Directly in their path was an old woman, journeying up the hill. She saw them, and jumped out of the way - just in time before the cart flipped over. "Are you all right, ma'am?" Amelia asked, from under the cart. Amelia got out from under the cart, as Phil began to talk to the woman. He asked why the old woman didn't simply journey around the mountain, taking a path, instead of treading up it. "I know what yoiu mean," the woman agreed. However, she knew that the way up and over the mountain was faster; the travel was just something she'd have to deal with. "It sure would be easier without this mountain here..." Amelia agreed. Suddenly, Phil looked like he'd gotten an idea. Back in the town, Phil, Amelia, Lina, and Gourry are talking to each other again in the town square; a fountain is flowing in the background. "Why should I do something like that?!" Lina exclaimed, obviously to some preposterous request by Phil. "The mountain between these two towns brings daily misery to both. Getting to the town on the other side just for that..." Phil trailed off. Suddenly, he began going into a rampage about the suffering of all the people, the deaths of all the people that had gone over the mountain, because the way around was too LONG. It was obvious that Philionel wanted Lina to cast the Dragon Slave, and blow up the mountain. Amelia, nearby, was pretending to, or actually, sobbing at Phil's story. "Come on, it's not THAT bad..." Lina insisted. Philionel, once again, insisted that Lina cast her Dragon Slave to destroy the mountain. "Only you can carry out this grand endeavor," Phil protested again, pointing. Lina finally decided to go along with it, causing Phil and Amelia to do a dance. As she chanted the incantation to the spell, Gourry grimaced, and covered his eyes. The power surged and Lina's hands, and then she cast it: "DRAGON SLAVE!" she hollered. All of the townspeople gasped as the gigantic blast blew up the entire mountain, leaving it only as a smoking crater. It seemed that the hardship of going across the mountain was gone, destroyed by a violent blast. The people of the town continued to look bewildered and surprised. "That was great!" Amelia exclaimed, happily. "So, did you see how it works?!" Phil asked, eagerly. Amelia sadly shook her head, losing her smile, and Phil sighed. One of the townspeople suddenly went into a rampage, yelling at Lina. "Why did you do that?!" she shrieked. "A long time ago, a great priest sealed evil ghosts in a shrine on top of the mountain!" As she protested, Lina sweatdropped. "Well, actually, I'm starting to think I shouldn't have done that..." she muttered sheepishly. The sun shone brightly overhead in the blue sky, but only for a second. Black clouds consumed the sky, and lighting flashed. When Prince Phil asked what was happening, Lina muttered, "You don't suppose..." For a second, the dark crater was completely silent and foreboding. All of a sudden.... they came. Ghosts by the hundreds poured out of the remains of the mountain, and Lina could only mutter a "Here they come..." as the townspeople screamed and ran for cover. They caused chaos everywhere, ripping up food, attacking people, and other acts; they were mischievous spirits, and the people could do little but run away in fright. Lina had begun trying to destroy them with magic, firing spells everywhere, but in vain. For while Gourry also repeatedly used his Sword of Light, there were simply too many spirits to be reckoned with. While Lina regretted what she'd done, Gourry also criticized her for her decision, which made her angry. At this point, Amelia ran up to Lina. "What are you doing, Miss Lina? You should use your Dragon Slave!" she shouted, in the middle of the insanity. At this, Lina turned. "Now listen! If I use the Dragon Slave now, I'll burn everyone in town to a crisp!" she snapped, and causing Amelia to lapse into hesitation and thought. "The most powerful spell in all magic isn't worth anything unless you know where and when to use it!" Amelia was still retaining that weird hesitation, contrary to her normal hyper personality. Blowing up another spirit while talking, Lina continued her rampage. "It's Dragon Slave this, and Dragon Slave that! It's like I'm-" All of a sudden, she was cut off. A spirit had flown into her, and all at once, she was possessed; a completely different person. As Gourry destroyed another spirit, he found Lina crying on the ground. She had turned from a powerful sorceress into a self-conscious crybaby. "Lina, snap out of it!" Gourry shouted. Lina suddenly changed again, turning into a drunk, and hanging onto Gourry. "Amelia, this should be your specialty!" Gourry shouted. "I can't destroy so many at once!" Amelia protested. "Unless I had some sort of magic amplifier..." She suddenly had a flashback of something that was back on top of the mountain; she ran to find it, and possibly put a stop to the spirits. Amelia got to the crater, and skidded down the slope, looking around. Finally, she found what she was looking for. "A Stone of Binding... If the legends are right, then..." she thought to herself, looking at the stone she had found. Chanting quietly, she then held up the stone, and shouted out her spell - "Megido Flare!" With the power of the amplification, the purification spell covered the entire town, bringing all the spirits away in a holy light. The people gasped again, not sure what to think. As the light cleared, the sun shone in the sky again... "The evil spirits are gone again!" Phil exclaimed, gladly. Lina and Gourry were waiting in the town, as well. They looked up as Amelia neared them, walking up in the middle of the town. "Victory!" she proclaimed, happily. The scene shifted to the four travellers once again on the road, the town left behind. "Amelia, this whole mess was all because of you!" Lina complained. "Well, if it's all right, we all learned a valuable lesson today," Phil said calmly. "You're the LAST person that can say that!" Lina protested. Amelia surprised everyone, especially Lina, by saying that she no longer wanted to learn the Dragon Slave. Lina had taught her something far more important - when and where to use magical spells. Lina's statement had only increased Amelia's respect of her, and so Lina wouldn't be rid of her yet.... Phil and Amelia started laughing openly at their previous situation, while Lina and Gourry could only sigh. "When are we going to get to Seyruun....?" Lina asked, exasperated. It looked like the journey would still be quite a while.... |
