The labyrinth

Xena follows the Minotaur into the filthy subterranean maze beneath the castle. She enters a series of foul-smelling, rat-infested hallways. Deadly shadows crawl around every corner. The stench is appalling and the silence is oppressive...

Sketch: Guess this sounds like a problem! Xena's goal in this level is to rescue Gabrielle. She is being held captive in the Torture Chamber. The labyrinth is divided into two parts, Xena being in the first, the Torture Chamber in the second. To get to the second half of the labyrinth, a gate must be opened. This can only be done by using a lever (with the Chakram) located in the far end of the first part. When Xena has entered the second part of the labyrinth, she will have to find the Torture Chamber, while being troubled several times by the Minotaur. In the Torture Chamber, it's up to Xena to destroy the Minotaur and rescue Gabrielle.

Important note: This is one of those levels where a written walkthrough can be very confusing, "go left, go right, go left, go right, go straight..." Aaargh! For your convenience, I've added a map of the labyrinth, pick-ups included. If you prefer a written walkthrough anyway, I've added that too.

Walkthrough: Study the map below. You're at the Start.

Proceed forward. On your right is the gate you'll have to open to reach the second part of the labyrinth, holding the Minotaur and Gabrielle. As for now, go left. Grab scroll#1 and a health power-up in the left corner (and don't forget those health power-ups, trust me, you're going to need them). Follow the hallway. Gigantic spiders will attack you. If you're a skilled fighter, I suggest you go for it and destroy them, but if you need practice, do avoid them at all cost. They are not difficult to kill but the gnaw away at your health bar. This is bad, because you need as much of your health as you can spare to face that petty Minotaur. If you just keep running and jump over the two pits, the spiders won't follow you.

Run on. Get the health power-up in the corner. Keep running and kill the two spiders. (These two are enemies you'll have to kill or they won't let you do your next work in peace.) See that huge pit over there? Across it is the crucial lever you need to operate to get through to the Torture Chamber. But the pit is too wide for you to jump over. But as you can see, a (dead) mummy is hanging from a big spiderweb, just above the handle. Shoot your Chakram toward this mummy. It will fall and the lever will operate under its weight, opening the gate as well as the Torture Chamber door. Run all the way back to the start. The gate is open now, so proceed further. This has the advantage that the spiders won't follow you further than this point. Get the health power-up in front of you. Follow the hallway. When you reach a pretty long "road", you'll hear snorting and roaring. That's the Minotaur! The problem is, there's no way you can avoid the single blow he gives you. Just bear with it. The Minotaur will disappear after he hits you. Follow him, jump over the pit, keep running (get the Armour Upgrade in the corner), keep going and going, jump over the pit. Here, the Minotaur will confront you again. After he hits you, continue carefully. At a certain point, you'll see that you have the choice of going left (into the Torture Chamber) or follow the corner along the right. If you do the last, you'll find a health power-up. But wait! The wall behind the health power-up is transparant! Go through it. Now, you're in a "present day" room with computers (the PC room), Xena posters, soda machines and more. (It could be called funny, but no offence, I think it spoils the Ancient Greece atmosphere the game has.)

Enough of this fooling around. Retrace your steps to the point before the Torture Chamber. Take a deep breath and enter the chamber.

Immediately, the door behind you closes and you're trapped inside the chamber. Quickly grab scroll#2 and a Resurrection Jewel. Do not attack the Minotaur when he battles you with his axe. Just avoid him when he does that. But when he runs for a corner of the chamber, give him a blow with the Chakram and run away before he charges at you. It takes three or four Chakram hits to destroy the Minotaur. Whatever happens, do not let the Minotaur drive you into a corner or you'll be done for. Just stay close to the circle in the middle of the chamber. Patience, you can do it. When Valarian/the Minotaur finally falls dead, go to poor Gabrielle to end the level.

Xena: (loosens Gabrielle's ties) "Gabrielle, why is trouble always breathing down your neck?"

Gabrielle: "It was all I could do to keep...that thing from breathing on me at all! But I did hear him plotting with some renegade Amazons. Something about evil magic, human sacrifices...and a New World Order?"

Xena: "I've heard there's an Amazon Village nearby." (draws sword) "Let's pay them a visit!"
