The lyre of orpheus

The great druid sorcerer, Yat, has vowed to conjure the unspeakable powers of the dead to retrieve the Lyre. Xena must find him in the ruins of the Great Temple. The mystic symbols must then be turned against him!

Sketch: This is the final T'ir Na level, in which you'll have to destroy the evil Yat, to retrieve the key against Kalabrax, the Lyre of Orpheus. (Orpheus was a famous character in Greek mythology. More info on his background is coming up very soon, so keep in touch!). By first defeating him outside the Great Temple, you'll lure him into magically hiding himself inside the temple ruins. After that, you must slash an artifact made of ice to activate the timed door which leads to Yats hideout. By setting the corresponding Devanagiri symbols in the final puzzle, you'll kill Yat.

Walkthrough: Slide down the ramp and grab the health power-up. Folow the road and find two druid sorcerer followers attacking you. Then get your reward; scroll#1. Go left and kill the evil guy next to the stone pillars. Hold on a minute and spot the Golden Shield on top of the tallest pillar here. By carefully jumping over from the lowest to the highest pillar, the shield will be yours. It is important to get this Golden Shield to easen the fight with Yat ahead.

After getting the shield, grab the health power-up hidden between the pillars and return to the spot where you found scroll#1. Tackle five sorcerer supporters appearing in random order, coming in from the area on the right. While getting the two health power-ups on the ground afterwards, three more Yat people charge. Kill them and follow the road further, getting the health power-up and scroll#2 along your right hand. Continue and prepare for Yat.

You can spot the sorcerer Yat (the goofy guy with the antlers on his head) right now. I'll cover your defense first and then I'll tell you how to defeat him. Yat has a couple of attacks. One of them is the ice spell; the light-blue circular beams he shoots at you. The trick is to keep running and jumping so he'll miss. If by accident, he shoots a bullseye, there are two ways of getting rid of the ice spell. The first is to slam on to Yat untill you're your normal self again (You can also take out on one of the six armed skeletons). The ice spell will shake off then. The other way is to wait for Yat to fire a small red beam at you. This eats up a bit of health, so I don't recommend it. Nevertheless, it does undo the ice spell.

Another attack of his is what I call the thunder circle; a shock of power, in which you can recognize the form of a circle. When he uses this rare attack, jump over the "outline" of the circle and you'll be safe. Whenever you're low on health, hide in any of the corners in the area and take a deep breath. There are also six health power-ups scattered around the area, mostly in the corners. Make use of these things. You might want to use up your Golden Shield here, but it's probably better to wait and save it for the second fight with Yat. Not necessarily, of course.

And now for your attack; while jumping and running continuously along the area, you'll see that Yat often magically appears, disappears and reappears. Don't try to follow him, this will provoke his attacks and unnecessarily harm you. If you're lucky, Yat will appear somewhere quite close to you, that's when you should attack him with all your might. (While he's taking damage, Yat does not attack so quickly). Keep slamming him until he disappears. Jump and run again and keep repeating this attack trick until Yat's health meter completely depleates.

When Yat is defeated, he'll chicken out and hide himself inside the Great Temple. Whew! Go up the stairs and defeat three angry druid soldiers. Go right and follow the curve. After tackling the three henchmen, claim two health power-ups. Return to the top of the stairs and now take the left turn. Take the health power-up in a corner. Kill two silly soldiers. While following the curve, get two health power-ups; one on the left and another on the right side. Keep walking till your way is blocked by a heap of snow. Carefully walk to the left and smack the unsuspecting soldier ahead with your Chakram. It will wake him up. Another hit will kill him. Now jump onto the snow heap and slide down to the place the soldier used to be. Follow the curve to the left and get the health power-up. Now, turn around and pay attention.

See that not so big gate, past the stairs to the right? That's where you'll be heading. But first, slash the slightly big "artifact" made of ice. This will trigger the gate to open, but only for a short while (about 15 seconds). Jump down, run up the stairs and quickly make your way to the gate to get through. (A rolling tumble could save you at the last moment). Make sure you've killed all the druid soldiers before slashing the artifact, or they'll get in your way and waste your time. If you don't get through, the artifact will regain its normal form and you can try again.

Now, prepare for the final confrontation with Yat. He has only one attack he uses here, and that is a lightning shock attack. It's not that hard an attack to avoid. He keeps using it continuously, so when you hear the sound of lightning, wait for a full second and the jump left or right. It should save you. The way to kill Yat is to look at the symbols engraved on the side of the platform he stands on, as well as the ones on the wall. When you stand right before a symbol on the platform, you'll see another symbol right in front of you, on the wall. The symbol on the platform should correspond with the one on the wall. You can change the engraving on the platform by slashing it with your sword. Keep repeating until you get the right symbol. (Use the Golden Shield to protect yourself from Yat's lightning.) Do the trick with all the symbols and Yat's lightning shock attack will turn against him and kill him. Kick back and enjoy an FMV. (By the way, the symbols you just saw? They're from the ancient Indian scripture called the Devanagiri. It was first used for the epic language of Sanskrit and nowadays, can still be found in the writing of the Hindi language.)

(The lighting bolt strikes Yat and destroys him in a cloud of smog.)

Yat: "Eeeeeeaaaaahhhhh!" (dies)

Xena: "(coughs) You should have known that smoking can kill you!"

(Fei, the village seer who owes Xena one, shows himself.)

Fei: "Thank you, Xena." (he takes the Lyre of Orpheus and it magically flies over to Xena's hands.)

Fei: "It has been predicted that the Lyre of Orpheus can unlock the gates of destiny. For those who seek to destroy evil, it has been predicted that this evil can be found in the Temple of Pinnacles. You must go now."

(Xena, by a magic flash, gets teleported to the Pinnacles Mountains)
