Her-story |
In the fall of 2001, Lauren Jones started looking for an organization on her campus to join, but unfortunately she couldn't find anything in those organizations that made want to join. She wanted to have real sisterhood that showed in the way they carried themselves. She also wanted to be in an organization where you didn't have to change who you are just to be in it. So, she enlisted the help of two friends, Eronica King and Arianna Miller. They all came together and decided to start their own sorority. On November 7, 2001, these three ladies founded Beta Phi Beta Sorority. It was going to be a different kind of organization that didn't dwell on who you knew or how you looked. The girls quickly began working on building a strong sisterhood legacy. The founders started getting the word out about their new organization when bad news came. The name Beta Phi Beta was already being used, by a male social club at Stillman College. So the girls searched and pondered for a while and chose Beta Phi Chi as the new name of their organization. They started to add members to there roster and gaining membership when more bad news came. Another organization similar to Beta Phi Chi and shared the same founding date and and name sent a letter to the members, informing them of the coincidence. The sisters then enlisted the help of some legal advisors and during the summer of 2003, Eronica and Lauren finally changed the name to Xi Lambda Chi or Xi-Chi for short. The sisters were elated that they now had a new name and new attitude and were ready to get back to business. In the fall of 2003, XLC came up with the idea of having honorary members. These persons did not go through the pledge process, but contributed to the good of the community or sorority. In the spring of 2004, some comments were brought forward to the sisters about a brother fraternity. Some friends of the sisters then decided they would start the brother fraternity. So on April 4, 2004, Alpha Phi Nu Fraternity was born. Also in the spring of 2004, XLC had their first line cross under the new name. Melissa Spicer, Chabre Johnson, and Rashell Harris, "Triple Bypass," the beta class, crossed the burning sands into the oasis of Xi Lambda Chi Sorority. Tragedy struck in August 2005, when Hurricane Katrina hit the Gulf Coast and devastated New Orleans. The storm destroyed the homes of all the sorors in that area and they were seperated across the country. In the fall of 2007, Founder Lauren Jones decided to reactivate the sorority and is currently in the process of retrieving info from young women across the country interested in joining the sisterhood. |
