Understanding Excel Add-Ins

Add -Ins are small programs which enhance Excel in various ways. Some are Functions and others are mini applications to generate reports, make calculations etc. These usually create additional functions or menus. Around a dozen are supplied with Excel (which are not loaded by default) and others can be downloaded form Microsoft or third parties. (See the Links page for more information). To see the Add-Ins that you have in your Excel, select Tools/Add-ins. To load an Add-In, you have to place a tick in the relevant box. If you have a number of Add-Ins ticked you will realize that Excel takes a longer time to load.

How to install the the Convertor Add-In

1. Download the file Convertor.zip.
2. Extract the Convertor.xla to the relevant folder. To do this follow the steps below:
(a) Find the Convertor.zip file in the location that was downloaded and right click on it;
(b) Select WinZip / Extract to;
(c) Select the relevant folder that you want to have the Convertor Add-In and click on the Extract button. When you do this the file convertor.xla will be created and saved in this folder.
3. Open Excel, select Tools/Add-Ins and click on the Browse button. Select the file "Convertor.xla" from the folder that you have previously extracted it and press OK. The "Convertor" Add-in now appears in the Add-In window. Ensure that it is checked and Press OK.

If you followed correctly the above steps you will see that the new function INWORDS is added in Excel. To ensure this, Select Insert/Function and search for the function INWORDS.

Troubleshoot working with the function

If you find that the function INWORDS does not work check the followings:
1. Ensure that the Add-In is loaded. If you select Tools / Add-Ins check that there is a tick on the "Convertor" Add-In. You can also select Insert / Function and search to see whether the function INWORDS exists.
2. If you create the workbook in other computer, Excel is looking for a copy of the Add-In file in the location where it was kept in the computer that made the workbook. To solve the problem follow the steps below:
A. Select Edit / Links. The "Links" window appears;
B. Select the source file Convertor.xla and chose Change Source. The "Change Links" window appears which resembles a standard dialogue box for finding files;
C. Navigate to the folder that contains the file  Convertor.xla and select the  file Convertor.xla;
D. Click OK to close the "Change Links" Window.
